Mercy was recommended, which makes the penalty for the crime life imprisonment in the Ohio penitenitary without hope of pardon. When the buzzer from the dingy jury room, indicating that an agreement had been reached, was sounded, the prisoner was sent for. At 2:35, ghastly pale, under his darkly colored skin, he entered court between the two deputy sheriffs who have been his constant attendants every moment he has spent outside the grim cell in the old county jail. He was visibly cowering and apparently expected the worst. Gone was the bravado with which he faced County Prosecutor Stanton and his chief assistant, James H Cassidy, when, like a cornered rat, he shouted at them to tell the truth. As the clerk intoned we, the jury find the defendant guilty as charged, he slumped down in his seat, but visibly brightened as he heard the recommendation of mercy which saved him from death in the electric chair. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Kept the Vows Made Her Lover Thirty-Seven Years Ago Until Released By Death. Article Text: The death of Miss Mina KESSINGER, near Jackson, O., the other day, adds the final chapter to an unusual love story. Thirty-seven years ago Miss KESSINGER, then living on a farm near Jackson, O., bade her soldier lover, John TREHEARNE, good-by as he marched off to war. She gave him a sacred promise to remain faithful. One day a letter came from hospital headquarters announcing TREHEARNE's death. The nurse said the soldier with his dying breath had asked that his sweetheart be informed of his death and to state that he died true to his vows and with her name on his lips. When Miss KESSINGER finished reading the letter she dropped on her knees and registered a solemn vow never to leave the farm, but to remain in seclusion and faithful to her soldier lover until death. She kept her vow. Although living only a mile from Jackson, the county seat, she never placed her foot inside of the corporate limits of the little city and has never been more than 100 yards from the farm which was her own in 37 years. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Two Ohio Polanders Get Wives for Fifty Dollars Each. Article Text: A very unique wedding was held on Kelley's Island Wednesday. A year ago Joseph VOLK left his family in Poland and came to this country, settling on the Island. After a time came the news that his wife had died. He had two grown daughters left over there, but he had not enough money to get them over. He borrowed $50 each from Peter MILLE and Joseph PIDOCK to pay his children's passage to America. Two weeks ago they arrived but when the men wanted their money he could not pay it. Finally he proposed to let them have his daughters, as wives in payment of the debt. Mary is 16, while Annie is only 14. The men gratefully accepted the offer and Wednesday a Cleveland priest was rowed across through the ice from Marblehead and the day was celebrated by a double wedding in true Polish fashion.
