Seth SMITH and Chauncey CRIPPIN Arrived at Franklinton on Friday Last, With Their Families From Lower Sandusky, Having Performed the Whole Route by Water, With the Exception of Five Miles Portage, in Eleven Days. Article Text: Columbus, (Ohio) May 20. Messrs. Seth SMITH and Chauncey CRIPPIN arrived at Franklinton on Friday last, with their families from Lower Sandusky, having performed the whole route by water, with the exception of five miles portage, in eleven days. They ascended the river Sandusky in a boat of about four tons burthen, as far as a little Indian village called Piketon, ten miles above Upper Sandusky; a distance of about a hundred miles. They then placed their boat upon two pair of waggon wheels, and with two yoke of oxen, transported it without the least difficulty, across a level and dry prairie five miles to the Little Sciota river, at the bridge on the Norton road. From thence to the main Scioto, a distance of ten or twelve miles, they met with no impediment, except a few logs, which they cut out of their way in about two hours. In the latter stream they were delayed two or three hours, by the want of slopes in two mill dams, which might be erected with small expense. The Sandusky river was as lo! w as it commonly is in the middle of summer. The Little Sciota was also low. The Big Sciota was in good boating order. The distance from the mouth of Little Sciota to Franklinton, is supposed to be between 40 and 50 miles. Those gentlemen inform us that they could have performed the route in much less time; but owing to the sickness in one of their families, they could not progress with expedition. They are confident that they could return the same way to Lower Sandusky, and transport a load of produce at a much lower price than the same could be taken in waggons. The truth of the above facts may be relied on by the public; and it is earnestly hoped they may lead to a further investigation into our neglected sources of inland navigation. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Cleveland, April 18 - wreck occurred on the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway at 6:10 o'clock this morning in which a brakeman named TICE, of Cleveland, was instantly killed. James HUMMELL, the fireman, of Canton, was badly crushed and may die, and RINZINBINK, Canton, the engineer, sustained a broken leg. R. BROGIO, a laborer, was seriously injured. The injured were taken to St. Alexis Hospital. The wreck occurred near Hamm Street, in the south end of Cleveland. A long freight train, coming north from Canton, collided with a work train running down from the Cleveland terminus. There is a curve at the place where the accident occurred. The curve, however, is not sharp one and fails to explain the wreck. Both engines were badly wrecked, as were all the cars of the freight train. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! "I have an excellent opportunity to know of the effect of food in sickness, for my husband is a practicing physician and has been recommending Grape-Nuts food for some time. I have watched the result, and have never known a case where it has not given satisfaction. "One instance will perhaps suffice to illustrate: A professor in the high school here was in very poor health from stomache trouble. He finally got into such a condition that he could not eat any food whatever without suffering and was so reduced in strength that he could hardly walk. He was put on Grape-Nuts food and gained rapidly and is now in good health. His cure was effected by the use of Grape-Nuts food." HIRAM MCCARTNEY Article Text: Logan County Index, 2 Apr 1896 AN OLD RESIDENT Indulges in a Few Reminiscences AND RECALLS SOME OLD TIMES As Well as Old Faces, Old Houses, Old Citizens and Old Memories. HIRAM MCCARTNEY Hiram McCartney was a brother-in-law of Canby [Richard Sprigg Canby], having also married a Simpson [Sarah Simpson daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Simpson]. The Simpson girls were noted for their beauty. McCartney was an erratic, brilliant and able lawyer, of wonderful persuasive eloquence, and had his health permitted he would have won golden fruit at the bar. He was an Atheist and was loud in the proclamation of his religious ideas, and frequently offensive to his hearers. He defended the murderer Hellman and it was alleged that he assisted him to escape from jail, and as his horse was hitched to the fence some miles from town on the morning after Hellman’s escape, it gave some color to the charge. He lived on the corner of Main and Chillicothe avenue, where the Boyd grocery store now is, and had his office in the front room. He died with consumption in the 40’s [abt 1843]. We will in other articles to follow give attention to other professions and matters of interest connected with the early history of our city. Desire to Lynch Weinstock Seems to Have Abated. Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 7 - Telephone communications from McConnellsville, Ohio, this morning, says all is quiet and danger of a lynching seems passed. Walter WEINSTOCK, assailant of Nellie MORRIS, is still closely guarded in the jail and Sheriff SWANDERS says he is prepared for any emergency. Word from Miss MORRIS this morning says she is still living but her condition is critical. She will probably recover if no complications set in. There is still much talk and feeling runs high in the neighborhood, but the probabilities are that the law will be allowed to take its course, as the grand jury will meet today and consider the case at once. The prisoner has not asked for counsel. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ OH-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
