    1. Emigration to Iowa - Meigs County Telegraph 1855
    2. I believe in the past month or so there was a question as to why so many people from Meigs Co., Ohio moved to Iowa. Today while reading an old newspaper from Meigs I came across this article. This may help explain the question why. Meigs County Telegraph Pomeroy, Ohio July 10, 1855 Tuesday The Emigration to Iowa Having just returned from a trip to Fort Dodge, Fort Des Moines, Iowa City, Muscatine and other points in the interior, we can testify to the most rapid emigration that ever in any one season flooded the State. Seek whatever thoroughfare you may, and you will find it lined with emigrant wagons. In many instances large droves of stock of a superior quality are met with. On our last day's drive into Iowa City from Fort Des Moines, we met 69 covered wagons seeking a home in the valley of the Des Moines. It is safe to say that the emigration to Iowa this year, will be double that of any preceding year. Dubuque Express [The above was in the Meigs Co. Telegraph July 10, 1855 followed by the below paragraph] The Ohioan who attempts a journey over the fertile and beautiful plains of that great Prairie State will be surprised, at almost every village, and in almost every stage coach, to find some old friend and neighbor from the Buckeye State. Inquiries have satisfied us that the emigration to Iowa is more numerous from this State than from any other in the Union. Almost without exception they are persons of intelligence, character, and means. They have farms of one or two hundred acres here, but they have families growing up about them, and, as they could sell their Ohio lands at -- from $20 to $70 per acre, and could buy just as good land in Iowa for $1.25, they are rapidly making the exchange. It seems by the above from the Dubuque paper, that this operation is going on with increased vigor. Transcribed by: Connie Cotterill Schumaker Schumaker4@aol.com

    3. Nov. 11, 1927 Columbus Citizen PAGE 2 SAYS M'DONALD SHOULD RESIGN HERBERT Renews Charge That Dragon Was Dry Agent -- Says Vic Misquoted State Senater Paul M. HERBERT who has been carrying on a "paper barrage" against the Antisaloon League thru B.F. McDONALD, state prohibition commissioner, now thinks the commissioner should resign. HERBERT brings out again the charge that D.C. STEPHENSON, former Indiana Klan dragon, now serving life in prison, was at one time an agent for the State Prohibition Department. Was Discharged There has never been any secrecy to the former employment of STEPHENSON by the state. It was during the period when "card agents" were allowed and there were several hundred such inspectors. STEPHENSON was let out by the department two months before he got into trouble in Columbus when a room in which he was having a "party" was raided in Columbus by local police. The case was never prosecuted because the hotel refused to file complaint after the damage to the room was paid for. State Inspectors were not in the raid, McDONALD has pointed out. It Was DUSTMAN HERBERT accuses McDONALD of giving out a statement that Governor DONAHEY was in favor of the Marshall bill. This is refuted by the information known at the time of the statement that Freeman L. DUSTMAN, Antisaloon League editor, conferred with DONAHEY on the afternoon of Nov. 2. McDONALD's department has been subservient to the Antisaloon League, according to HERBERT, who also intimates now that another "religious bloc" controlled McDONALD. The vote on the Marshall bill was so decisive that bloc control has been repudiated and therefore "McDONALD should resign," according to HERBERT. 3. The Columbus Citizen Nov. 11, 1927 BEGG TO RUN Friends Announce Candidacy for Governor By Citizen State Wire Toledo, O., Nov. 11 -- Friends of James T. BEGG, Sandusky congressman, last night announced the candidacy of the Sanduskian for governor of Ohio. The announcement was made by Alfred KOCK, president of the LaSalle & Koch Co., at a dinner complimenting the businessmen of the city. "You know Mr. KOCH's reputation for vreacity," BEGG said later, "further than that I have nothing to say about my candidacy for governor." The congressman asked many questions about the boom recently launched in Toledo by Atty. Gen. TURNER. With TURNER's candidacy practically admitted, it looks to friends of BEEG that the fight for the Rebpulican nomination for the gubernatorial position will be between BEGG and TURNER. 3. The Columbus Citizen Nov 11, 1927 HARDING IS EULOGIZED AT MARION TOMB Chief Justice Marshall Lauds Late President As Distinguished Servant Women in Pilgrimage Columbus Glee Club Participates in Ceremonies; Wreath Placed by Mrs. LEVAN "We stand in the shadow of a great memorial erected to the memory of one of the great army of distinguished servants which Ohio has contributed to the service of this nation," Chief Justice Carrington T. MARSHALL of the Oho Supreme Court declared at the memorial ceremonies held at the Harding tomb in the Marion Cemetery Friday afternoon by the Ohio Council of Republican Women. The marble memorial erected to the HARDINGs is about 300 yards from the vault where the bodies of the late President Warren G. HARDING and his wife were place until the completion of the memorial. The exterior of the memorial was completed recently. Critical Period Judge MARSHALL said further of HARDING: "He became president at one of the critical periods of our history -- the period of reconstruction following a colossal assault upon civilization; a period demanding a readjustment of social, industrial, commercial and political relations caused by the maladjustments of the World War but recently ended. "It remained for him to complete the task of bringing about treat relations, and of restoring friendly ties of commerce and intercourse with the nations with whom he had but recently engaged in deadly conflict." One Of Really Great "In the short space of two and one-half years he established a record of accomplishment which must forever place him among the lists of our really great presidents." "He had all the essential elements of greatness -- meekness, humility, modesty, lowliness of heart plus the spirit of service and sacrifice. He was not a genius and while his name will never be emblazoned in large letters upon the pages of history, yet he was safe, conservative, sincere, honest and courageous. He had poise, and as a helmsman could make the Ship of State ride with an even keel." Motor Caravan About 1000 Republican women made the pilgrimage to Marion from Columbus, forming a huge motor caravan which left Broad and High streets shortly after 9 a.m. An automatic escort representing Republicans of Marion met the caravan outside the Marion city limits and led the way to the Masonic Temple, where a buffet lunch was served. Mrs. Abigail HARDING LEWIS and Mrs. Heber VOTAW, sisters of the late president; Dr. and Mrs. G.T. HARDING, Mrs. Roy D. MOORE, Mrs. C.E. SAWYER and Mrs. Nettie CLAPP were among the guests of honor at the luncheon. Glee Club To Sing The program at the Harding tomb included the singing of "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" by the Republican Women's Glee Club of Columbus, a prayer by Dr. U.S. DAVIS, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, Marion, and a song by the Men's Republican Glee Club. A wreath was placed on the tomb by Mrs. Wilma SINCLAIR LeVAN, Steubenville, national committee-woman for Ohio and Mrs. Charles H. SABIN of New York. Taps concluded the ceremonies. The Ohio Council of Republican Women will hold a business session at 3 p.m. Friday in the Hall of Mirrors of the Deshler-Wallick Hotel. There will be a banquet Friday evening at the Deshler. Business meetings will be held again Saturday. If you would like a photocopy of an article, please contact me. This and other Ohio newspaper transcriptions can be found on my website.
