"Dusting Off Memories", the country records preservation project, needs your support! We have recently relocated to the former Mediterranean near Morristown, Ohio which is located in the western section of Belmont County. The new location is accessible to major highways (interstate), restaurants, local libraries, the county seat in St. Clairsville, and Barkcamp State Park. The continuation of this project is imminently in danger as a permanent location continues to be in question. Volunteers have worked diligently on this project to preserve and make accessible the old county records. Some of these records date back to 1801, even before Belmont County was formed. It is important to save these records for future generations. The "Dusting Off Memories" project is a volunteer effort which eventually hopes to become a non-profit organization which will continue to preserve the history of our county. Volunteers clean the massive volumes, catalog, and do research. Western Belmont County has much to offer and the location at the Mediterranean is ideal. The Mediterranean is located on Old Route 40, known as the Old National Road, which is part of Ohio's Bicentennial Highway system. The site offers handicap accessibility, plenty of parking, a relaxed and scenic atmosphere, and best of all, over 6000 volumes of county records. Please voice your support of this project at the Mediterranean, to the county commissioners, as well as local, county, and state officials. Gordie W. Longshaw: glongshaw@belmontcountycommissioners.com Charles (Chuck) Probst : cprobst@belmontcountycommissioners.com Mark Thomas : mthomas@belmontcountycommissioners.com With your support of a permanent location for this project, "Dusting Off Memories" will continue for future generations. The Newspaper Abstracts website began 6 years ago as a place to permanently archive news articles that were being transcribed and sent through a few regional mail lists. Over the years, the site has grown to include articles from across the entire United States, Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The site is maintained 100% by volunteers and relies on visitors and members to contribute news items for sharing with others. If you have old news articles, please consider submitting them to be included on the site. More information can be found in the site faq's at http://www.newspaperabstracts.com The following articles have been added to the Newspaper Abstracts website in the past few months. A lot of you know how much I use old newspaper as a source for information. If you had ancestors from Virginia you may want to check this site. The following site is an index which can be searched by surname. It also can be narrowed down by date. The years covered start in the 1785 and goes into 2000. Once you find an article you are interested in you can order copies by email or phone. The fees are very reasonable, fifty cents a page and $2.50 shipping and handling. Order up to 10 articles at a time Library Historical Newspaper Index - FCPL _http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/newsindex/default.asp_ (http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/newsindex/default.asp) Hope this will be of help.
