Have found more information. Looks like my George W. Mckinney is on the 1860 Iowa Van Buren Village Township census. Listed with wife and a number of children. What's interesting is that my family had reported none of these children except one (the ones I knew about were born post 1860)...but my family had said a child or step-child was named Eli, relationship uncertain. Over in the 1860 Iowa Van Buren Washington Township census there is a William McKinney, of an age to be a brother to my George, who has, among his children, a son named Eli. William McKinney is given as born in Ohio, and his wife, Esther, in PA. I have discovered that this William McKinney died 1862 in the Civil War and several of his children entered the Davenport home for Civil War Orphans. What do you think? Is it possible we may be able to make a connection? (I've tried to find out what happened to these children and have learned nothing. I contacted the Iowa Historical Society and they have no! other records for them except that they entered the orphanage.)
