Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that if any of you are interested, the following Rootsweb mailing lists are now officially up for adoption. As I really don't have the time that needs to be put into them, I am hoping a more devoted list mom or dad, will step forward. :) This is a "first come, first served" adoption, and if you request to adopt, and don't hear back from me immediately, please be patient. Hello list quite a few folks located ancestors in the Lawrence Co. Ohio Children's Home. I am posting the links to the two pages from the 1900 Census listing the "inmates" at the home. I hate to sound defensive here, but if you don't think I should be sharing Ancestry's pages with the public, please don't tell me. Just write them directly about their policy of sharing pages. There is a feature on each page that allows people to share with anyone. I've done that in the past and got a few unexpected blasts from folks who said it wasn't fair to share pages to people who didn't pay for Ancestry like they had to. We are all here to help each other. If I find something helpful, I'm sharing it. The book by Martha J. Kounse that I've offered to do look-ups from covers the inmates at the Home from 1874-1926. I don't know if this Home was ennumerated on any other censuses....it should be, but I haven't looked. I've only searched for the 1900 census. If you need the 1880,1910, 1920 census checked for the Home, let me know, I will send it to you. http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7602&path=Ohio.Lawrence.Upper.84.42&sid=&gskw=&cr=1 Page one of two pages http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7602&path=Ohio.Lawrence.Upper.84.43&sid=&gskw=&cr=1 Page two of two. If you'd like a copy of the original record (with the Home's notes) on the child located in this book, you can request a copy from the microfilm of the record by the name, "Lawrence County, Ohio Children's Home Register 1874-1926" from one of these three places: (the book version is more helpful for the genealogist for the author has researched additional outside sources for each child, and therefore, has more in-depth information about the child/family than the original Children's Home records.) 1. Your local Family History Center Library. 3. Ohio Historical Society Library 1984 Velma Ave. Columbus, Ohio 3. Ohio University, Alden Library, Athens, Ohio Many of the children were brought to the Home through Probate Court. I haven't checked for these records, but if you'd like a copy of that original record, I'd suggest you contact Lawrence Co. Ohio Probate Court for further instructions on where those originals are, and how to obtain a copy. Here is what Martha J. Kounse (the author of the book version) had to say about her project: "This book has been ten years in the making. I have painstakingly read page by page of the original microfilmed record of the Lawrence County, Ohio Children's Home Register. Many times I proofed the names, dates, and places for accuracy. Lots of other sources were researched to add more in-depth information about the children and their families. You will find very important and rare genealogical information not found anywhere in other documents. That information includes adoptions, deaths in hospitals in other counties, burials, death and birth dates (and places) of parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. In some cases it gives the maiden name of mother and illegitimate children's parents. If you have been looking for a lost child in your family who disappeared, YOU NEED TO CHECK THIS BOOK!! Sometimes children were sent to homes in other cities where they became of age and stayed in that town, marrying and raising a family there. You will be amazed at the amount of material included." ---April. --------------------------------- Expecting? Get great news right away with email Auto-Check. Try the Yahoo! Mail Beta.
Hello fellow listers, I have just recieved through the mail the 2003 edition of "Annotated Lawrence County, Ohio Children's Home Register 1874-1926" by Martha J. Kounse in the mail today. Beautifully written, clear, prcise alphabetical listing of the hundreds and hundreds of children passing through this home. It not only has an index, and A-Z registry, but it also has all of the notes from the Children's Home regarding the circumstances surrounding the child's stay there. Some children have their birthdays listed, some have their parents names, extended families names, and who picked them up from the Home upon discharge, some notes even tell where they went after leaving the Home. Of course I can't keep all this information to myself. If anyone needs a look-up, please don't hesitate to request one. I'll e-mail you what I see. As sad as these children's stories are in this book, I hope some of us find our long lost ancestors. We all are here now because these children made it. They survived the horrors of circumstance, and went on to lead productive lives! After all, we're here now reaquainting ourselves with them. Let us honor those childrens' struggles and finally bring them home!! ---April. --------------------------------- No need to miss a message. Get email on-the-go with Yahoo! Mail for Mobile. HI: I'm researching the family of WILSON and ELIZA COWEN of Tennessee. They moved to Brown Co., OH around 1843. Eliza died and Wilson married MIHALY HIGHWARDEN. I believe Wilson and Mihaly had two children, a boy and a girl, both of whom died, between 1860 and 1870. In 1860: Cowen, Wilson, 50, black, born in TN wife Mehala, 36 son Franklin, 17 daughter Julia, 15 son James, 9 daughter Eliza, 6 daughter Elizabeth, 19 Amanda Cowen, 22 Mary Cowen, 10 Alfred Prigamy, 17, laborer A daughter, Sarah Belle (nicknamed Belle) was working in a white household in Ripley. In 1870 Census: Cowen, James, 20 Cowen, Elizabeth, 20 Cowen, Eliza, 17 Edelia A, 1 (Elizabeth's daughter with Thomas Bowman) Cowen, Wilson, 58, drayman Cowen, Mihaly, 50 Sarah Belle married William Hughes and had a son, William, by 1870. My research question is: What happened to: Franklin Cowen Amanda Cowen Julia Cowen Mary Cowen Franklin doesn't show up in my Census searches, but I only used two spelling variations (Cowan, Cowen). I don't know who the women may have married or whether the youngest, Mary, moved elsewhere in the county to work. Also: Annie Cowen, probably born in the 1860s, is living in Tenn. with her husband Chester Tally in 1871-1874. They had a Freedmen's Bank account. The account names Wilson and Eliza as her parents, that she was from Ohio and that Eliza is dead. All are in sync with what I know about the Cowens, but Annie doesn't show up in any other records. How do I figure out whether Annie is Wilson and Eliza's daughter? Thanks, Kberry
