    3. I was just at St. John's Cemetery - had a wonderful guide the first time, someone I "met" on this list. Then my husband and I went together, and I walked around the whole place. Lots of names that are in my family - I'm just not sure that these people are OUR people - yet! The Diocese took about a month to respond to my request, and wrote (TYPED!) a formal letter with all the info I needed, plus enclosed a map. [Here's another volunteer job for someone: scanning in all the cemetery maps for the Diocese. It would sure be quicker to be able to respond on line. And as long as we're wishing, let's look for all the burial records to be indexed/digital!] At St. John's, a lot of the section markers are missing, so sometimes it's hard to locate the site you want. And a lot of the grave stones have sunk and are covered with grass. But. If you've got the time, and a map, it's do-able. Next time, however, I'm going to enclose a donation with my request, and ask for some names buried in plots near "ours". At least then I'd know I was in the right section, especially in the "single grave" areas, which don't seem to have too many markers. And most of the ones I saw were so weathered, they weren't readable. Or maybe some are buried. Sure wish there were an easier way to locate grassed-over graves - something like a metal detector would be handy! Somebody else on the list [from out of town] had contacted the Catholic cemeteries association, and they actually sent a representative with him while he searched (he gave the guy a tip). I've found helpful people at the Diocese, and I think there's more gold in them thar hills! Best wishes on your search.
