Looking for information on my Callighan ancestors. Jeremiah O. Callighan married Anne Collins in Cleveland in April 28, 1862 by "A. Rappe" = my great, great grandparents. Their daughter Mary Callahan (sp) (1866-1904) was my great grandmother; and she married Michael Francis Keyes at St. John's Cathedral in Cleveland on 18 Jun 1890. Does this stuff ring a bell with anyone out there?
Cross was the first street south of Commercial from Canal road to Broadway near where the W. 3 St. bridge crosses the river. Cross is no longer there but Commercial is. My gg grandparents Dennis and Alice Callaghan and my great grandfather Philip Finnigan lived there from 1850 to 1870. Philip O'Brien
Sorry about that. I just assumed that since you were on the CLEVELAND IRISH list, you had some background in Cleveland and Irish geography. "The Angle" is/was an area in Cleveland which many of the Irish emigrants of the late 19th century migrated. It was quite poor but had a strong comradeship among those who lived there. Many of the Irish American descendants remain in the Greater Cleveland area. The Catholic parishes were St. Malachi, St. Patrick, St. Colman, St. Bridget and I believe there might have been one other. Not all were situated directly in the Angle area. Mayo is a county in Ireland in what is designated as the West. It is in the Republic of Ireland. Many of the emigrants from there, especially during and after the Famine of '47 settled in Cleveland. The Irish descendants in Cleveland are representative of all the Irish counties but in this particular area Mayo appears to be the predominant. However, Wexford is well represented as well. Hope this helps. Mary Ellen Chambers

Hello: Thank you for your response. I am new to Geneology. What does Mayo mean and what does The Angle mean?
Sorry, can't help you. Have no listing for Cross St. in Name Change Directory. We made a hard copy of the site. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~officer/Clev1906A_C.html. It could have been in "The Angle" but maybe other listers would have an idea. I know that Somerville is a Mayo name, especially around the Westport area. Mary Ellen Chambers.
Thank you for your response. Do you know what Cross Street became? That was the first street Andrew Somerville lived on
Birch Street became 50th St. NW (Lorain-Detroit) and Fairfield St. became Fairfield Ave. SW after July 1906 Mary Ellen Chambers

Maybe someone on list can tell you where these streets are located. Carolyn
I am looking for any information on Andrew Somerville. He came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1870 from Canada. He died in 1912. His son was also Andrew who died in 1936. I am also looking for information on Cornelius Cronin. He married Louisa McGinness in 1891 in Cleveland. Cornelius died in 1904 from a streetcar accident. Any information would be appreciated
I have unsubscribed you for now. Hope to see you back again soon.
