Karen, Saw you message today. Am very sorry to learn about your husband's death. Had he been ill or was it sudden? My prayers. Hello, List -- I found the tombstone for my great-great grandparents, Patrick and Mary Walsh at St. John's Cemetery on Woodland in Cleveland. Her dates: 1832 to 1905. Patrick Walsh: 1826 to 1897 (but for him, we have a death notice: he lived at 139 Detroit Street; and died 6 July 1897). The Cuyahoga County Archives don't have a death certificate (Dad's list on the cemetery deed shows burial in April, 1905), but she's not in the Cleveland Public Library on-line database, under any of 4 spellings of WALSH. We'd surely like to know her maiden name! All four of their daughters married at St. Malachi's -- and Cousin Adrienne in Denmark got those dates from the Catholic Diocese, and some of the witnesses and priest's names. NOTHING about the parents, nothing about where they came from. We found out that the two older daughters were born in New York. Somewhere. The two younger daughters in "Ohio" -- somewhere -- thanks to the Census. So. Does anyone have a suggestion about where we can find some filmed newspaper archives for the Cleveland area for 1905? Or any OTHER suggestions? I'm just getting back to family research (my husband died in October) -- and I think I need a jump-start! Besides, Adrienne is writing to me and jiggling my elbow -- she's finding more information from Denmark than I'm finding in Cleveland! Thanks. Warm regards, Karen

If you go to US Gen web site, you can get to free census. They are by surname or state or year. Not complete but great data. We found our Cleary's listed as Clary, Friel listed as Frahill in early years (1870) and my grandfather Anthony Friel listed with correct spelling 1900. Also other surnames in other states. The brogue must have been a problem for the census taker. However, if you know some of the children's names or other pertinent data, you might be surprised. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio
Will check this out on my census later today. My Irish side are O'Malley's . Thanks, I wasn't aware that there was any free access to censuses....... Looked it up and none of the Devers fit - at lest not doing just a quick look. Paet.. Alice, Thank you! I currently don't have access to the Census Lists. If you could find anything and pass it on to me I would be very appreciative. My Mary Omaley (as written on the marriage license) married Patrick DEVER on 12 Feb 1885 in Cleveland, Ohio (Cuyahoga Cty.) I have Patrick passing away on 10-1-1932 in Cleveland. Mary died 1-22-1929, also in Cleveland, or possibly 7-10-1925 I also have a notation of the possibly "my" Patrick Dever came over on the Britanic or Britania by way of Philadelphia. My Patrick was born about 1860 in Achill. The family went to St. Patricks and the when they moved further west they ended up at St. Coleman's, also. I honestly believe that all the Devers in Cleveland are in some way related. There is a woman who has a milk and cheese stand at the West Side Market who is named DEVER - she insists that her Devers and mine are not related...... but if you look at her face there is no question! Any help you might give me would be appreciated. Paet...... Paet, I have forwarded your email message to my former brother-in-law, James Juhn. My mother-in-law was Catherine Dever, a wonderful woman from County Mayo but I heard her talk of Achill many times. She was born in Ireland, one of many children. She married a German by the name of Mike Juhn. I know that my mother-in-law attended St. Coleman's church. Do you have paid access to the census records? I would be most happy to look up your Party(s) if you think that would help. Good luck. My great grandfather, Patrick DEVER (m. Maria "Mary" O'Malley) came to Cleveland somewhere in the 1880's from Achill Island. He lived in a house on Herman Avenue. I was wondering if anyone has any Dever's living on Herman or anywhere else in The Angle before this time. I am beginning to wonder if other Dever's had come over earlier from Achill? Paet Burcham
All those Callaghan lived in Cleveland arriving about 1848.
Many thanks for answering. I do not recognize any of these names as being related to my Callaghans. Can you tell me where they lived? There were several branches in PA about which I know little. If these folk were all in Cleveland, I guess there is no relationship. Regards, J.R.B.
Nancy, My Charles O'NEILL b. 1838 was the son of Charles O'NEILL, probably the oldest son given the naming patterns of the time. I don't have any information on his siblings. He lived in Co. Tyrone, but then so did an awful lot of O'Neills. Without more information on my family, I couldn't say with any certainty if your family is connected to mine. Karen
Karen, regarding your posting about Charles O'Neill. Do you know of any possibility he had a brother Michael b. abt. 1840 who also settled in Cleveland. Michael is said to have immigrated mic 1880's. Michael was married to a Hanora Shea in Ireland and had three known daughters. Myra O'Neill b. Ireland, Mary, b. Ireland, and Frances b. Ireland. Myra married William P. Bresnahan of Columbus, Ohio, Mary died single about 1920, she also lived in Columbus, Ohio then, - Frances married lst Peter Hovis, and 2nd Mack Wilson. She had only one child William Hovis. If you or anyone on the list can help with a connection or information I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Nancy
In reviewing past activities in my genealogic quest, I came upon your Email to Cleveland Irish @rootsweb.com. Jerome O'Callaghan is the great grandchild of Simon Finnigan and Alice (Nee) Ward and his grandfather was Jeremiah O'Leary. My great grandparents were Simon Finnigan and Alice Ward, After the death of Simon, Alice then married Dennis Callaghan ( not O'Callaghan). Do we have a connection? Philip O'Brien
Wise discerning people, would be my answer! Actually, I would assume the steel mills, the early auto industry before moving to Detroit, shipping industry, farming, the Canal. The Irish emigrants usually followed other relatives who had gone before so the saying "Y'all come!" was written home. I'm sure other Listers might have some other ideas.
