    1. Re: Burial information and a Diocese question
    2. Bill~ Re: Cleveland Diocese Archives, they are extremely slow to respond and usually it is a partial response to your query with a nominal fee attached. I have NEVER sent a check beforehand because the fee has always been different. To get a response I have used letters, a repeat about every 4 weeks, phone calls to a machine and to Chris (the only person who appears to work there) about every 2 weeks. I have asked if I could even do my own research but was told no that was not the policy. Usually it is about 6 months of nagging before a response with fee. Wasn't aware they were online with "E" mail or I would have used it. Cemeteries: City of Cleveland Cemeteries General Office 21400 Chagrin Blvd. Cleveland Ohio 44191 216-348-7210 Catholic Cemeteries Association No address in phone book 216-641-7575 I have talked to people at various times re: ancestors at Cleveland Cemeteries and found them quite helpful, responding to request, even going the extra mile. I have never called the Catholic Cemeteries but have called Calvary on several occasions. I found them most helpful and accommodating. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood, Ohio

    1. Re: Cleveland diocese/cemetery assistance reply
    2. Patrick Manning
    3. My experience with the Cleveland Diocese, as well as the office people in the Catholic Cemeteries Association for Cleveland, has been mainly negative. The staff(usually groundskeepers or security guards) are most helpful and friendly. One has even called me to follow up on a particular relative I was researching, and personally physically checked out a gravesite to save me a trip to Cleveland. However, the office people, those who answer phone calls, are generally negative, and at times unfriendly. They assume the question is either unanswerable(i.e., "I don't know where to look, nor do I WANT to look, so therefore I can't help you") or refuse to help out, citing "official procedures or policies." This is specifically the main office at Calvary Cemetery. Good luck to all who dial that phone number. I have had better service mailing info requests to the Cemeteries Association-also located at Calvary Cemetery. They usually will do 2 or 3 look-ups for grave plots, but you need your name/date information in some sort of order for them. I guess the phone people don't get the mail. In general, the diocese office(Chancery Bldg.) is of little help to genealogists; better to try at the parish level for help. Even here, various parishes will glean you various responses. Some pastors are most helpful and engaging, some busy and unable to help much at all. (As an aside, this option will probably get worse as the dwindling number of priests in the diocese are asked to take on more responsibilities.) As for the Association, mail is the way to go, as the people on the phones are interested in selling stones and plots today, not in helping those who have already spent(or whose ancestors have spent) their money there. 1. Burial information and a Diocese question
    2. Does anyone know of a place that one can contact for burial information at a city cemetery? I have the name of the person and the date of the burial. However, the cemetery listed on the Death Certificate is apparently very wrong. Once, whey I was trying to get some information with the name and date of burial, I was told that I also had to provide the name of the cemetery! Hopefully, any information from SKS will get me around that problem. My second question has to do witht the response from the Diocese of Cleveland. Something like a year ago, I sent in two letters with questions and with each a check. The checks have been cashed over 8 months ago but no response. My last e-mail to her has not been responded to. Anyone having problems like this? Any suggestions other than empty threats? Bill in Gig Harbor

    3. Hi Larry, My great-grandparents were also John and Mary Gibbons who ran a boarding house on West River Rd in the Flats. While the names and ages are right, the children and the Chicago connection don't match. My John and Mary had 3 children as well Mary, Hannah (Hannah Gibbons elementary school in Cleveland is named after her) and my grand father Patrick (nicknamed Perk). All of the these children remained in the Cleveland area their whole lives. Their children include Lawrence (1870), Thomas and Mary Catherine. The children wound up in Chicago. Larry

    2. Thanx Pat. That is surely what I mean. We missed it last year. I rode the trolly lots and lots of times. That was when children would be safe riding and going into the subway alone. Sorry you cannot do that in this day and age. Thanx again. Marlene

    1. Detroit\Superior Bridge
    2. Marlene.......my niece works for the county dept that handles all of the bridges, etc. I asked her about the tour under the Detroit\Superior (I assume that is what you mean) and she said that the tour will be Saturday, May 24. She believes it starts at 9am & runs through either 3:00pm or 3:30pm. They open it up twice a year (fall and spring) and let you walk down in the old streetcar tunnels and on the viaduct under the bridge. My husband and I went last fall and it was very interesting....Pat

    2. Excellent site! Used it to create a remembrance book for our 50th reunion of class of 1951 from OLA! Everyone enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Only reproduced images which were around in 1950/51. However, doing copies suitable for framing didn't work. Anyone have and ideas for people who want to "scrapbook or frame" for their family tree? 1. Images of Cleveland
    2. There are over 200 images of Cleveland on the Encyclopedia of Cleveland site. Unfortunately, they are not indexed. http://ech.cwru.edu/ On the left side of the home page, under 'searching', is an option for Image Gallery.

    2. Don't know about the Bridge Walk but there is an Ohio City Home tour on May 18th. Can't find my "E" mail notification but I think it's about $12. per. There will be Trolleys etc. Tickets can be purchased pre on line or by phone. Will try to get data for list. Some of the residences my family lived are still there. Don't know if they are part of the tour but it will be interesting to see. My great Aunt Ann MCFADDEN MCNAMARA COONEY lived in the red brick house 2nd from corner west of W 38th, south side of Bridge Ave. Have been watching the renovation on it. Mary Ellen Chambers

    2. Lily, I will check at the Market this weekend. Once I find a source, I will post in case someone else has such a quest. The "Angle" has either just opened or will quite soon. My sister lives at the old Fries Schele (SP?) bldg. She mentioned it last week. I will check with her. Also, I am told that Western Reserve Historical has old pictures, copies can be obtained. My source is the mgr. at Alfonso's. He obtained old pictures at WRHS to put up in the restaurant. Stated there are many of lower West Side Cleveland. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio

I don't know the name of the store. It used to be Euclid Fish if anyone on the list knows the name of the store now. I will try to get out that way in the next few days and write down the name of the store. I would call first to be sure, but you need the name of the store first. I was told this late last summer but I am not sure if it is true. Ceal
