    2. Lilly.........I found 1850 court records (for a felony) at the County Archives on Franklin. It listed the crime, judges, jurors, and sentence. Unfortunately, the books are not indexed and you have to "search"..........Pat

    2. Does anyone know where the court transcripts for 1868 are held? These would be transcripts for a trial by jury for a felony crime. 2. Western Reserve is NOT very Geneology friendly! I am not sure why............Maybe they do not have enough employees. When I started doing research on line about 4 years ago, I even joined with an annual fee. Things were still the same lots of paper work with no results. And they want more money! My Great Uncle was a Professor of Romance there, he wrote many articles and a couple of books. I NEVER was able to obtain information from them. Sooooogood luck:) If you figure out how to get info I would love to know! Happy Hunting, Susan Ward Searching - BEUCUS, DEAMON, CHRISTENSON, MICHEL, RETTBERG, WARD

    1. Voter registration cards - a problem
    2. I have found that the 1896 and 1902 voter registration cards are in the Western Reserve Historical Society holdings. When I e-mailed them for instructions about how to obtain copies of cards for certain people, they responded that I have to go through all the steps for general research assistance. The only problem that I have with that is that they have always asked for $45 for whatever I needed. Does anyone know how to get a few photocopies out of them without having to pay a huge fee and providing a five generation history? Bill Dalton

    3. Whiskey Island is a fiction book written by Emilie Richards. It was published by Mira Books in 2000. It is available in paperback. I purchased my copy a few months ago (after I read about it on this board) from Amazon.com. It was also available at my public library. It's about a present-day Irish American family who run a saloon on Whiskey Island in Cleveland, but an incident causes them to delve into the past. 2. Thanks for the "Heads Up" Janet. It was a great summer book. I purchased 4 copies and sent them to family in Mayo. The last I heard the book was being passed around the Allergan Company in Westport. Years ago, I realized that the family in Ireland had questions about what happened with our common ancestors who emigrated in the late 1800s. My branch kept a tenuous link through the Irish Civil War, World War II, etc., but there were some in the USA with whom the thread broke. To date we have found a few. Some have responded; others ignored us. We will keep trying. The "Whiskey Island" novel gave the Westport family an idea of that long ago time in Cleveland. Mary Ellen

    3. I know that several months ago there was some discussion about the novel, "Whiskey Island" by Emilie Richards. I wanted to let you all know that I am a librarian and I just received a review copy of the sequel to Whiskey Island. It's called "The Parting Glass" and it will be coming out in hardback in July. I haven't read it yet, but when I do, I'll let you know what I think... Janet in NJ

A few years ago I called them requesting a copy of my great-grandparents marriage records from 1873. the lady was very nice and took all the information but I never heard from them. After a few months I put the request in writing and sent a donation along with it. I commented that I had previously requested the information but they must have "forgot" about it. Within a few weeks I did receive a copy of the marriage records that I requested. 1. Re: Cemetery information and Diocese of Cleveland Archives
    2. Bill~ Thanks for the "E" mail address. Will use it the next time I am trying to get info from the Diocese archives. I have had no problem what so ever with Calvary either by phone or personal visit. I was trying to find my g grandfather at one time. They told me he was not in the grave but his name was on the stone. He died in a ship disaster in 1875 somewhere on the Great Lakes. Who was in the graves, and that there were spaces left. Since my g grandmother was the first one buried, I assume she purchased the plot. It's location etc. was explained. Have asked for their assistance on 3 other occasions for other ancestors without problem. Maybe I just hit them on a good day. To contact the parish house for a look up could be a problem. The parish priests, in some cases just one, really can't handle genealogy look ups. Working through the secretary in the rectory is iffy at best. Some are quite gracious but all have told me that I must make a personal appt./visit to the Rectory for a marriage/baptism certificate. Have never been able to get it handled on the phone. St. Pat's on Bridge Ave supplied my husband and I with the needed certificates with seal when we were applying for Irish citizenship several years ago. These were from 1878-1899-1935. I forget the donation amt. Just data was refused. St. Malachi's referred us to the Archives and 6 months+ later we got data and no certificate. 3 months later we got stamped certificate from 1870 and 1871. St. Patrick's West Park, we were referred by secretary to priest, left number and wrote. No reply. Looking for record of burial at their small cemetery. Have had no experience with St. Colmans or the former St. Bridgid parish. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood, Ohio

    1. Cemetery information and Diocese of Cleveland Archives
    2. Thanks to the three listers who have responded, so far, to my posting. Mary Ellen, the e-mail address for Chris Krosel is ckrosel@dioceseofcleveland.org. An of line response from a lister suggested that I contact the parish directly. Does anyone know how to go about contacting Immaculate Conception parish? I would suspect that all the records may have been collected at the archives. Anyone have an answer to that? I have had generally good luck with the people at the Catholic Cemetery Association. The only two bones that I have to pick with them is that they will, almost always, refuse to let me know about the other burials in the family lot. The second problem is that they will not let me know who purchased the grave lot for the person who I am virtually certain is the first wife of my ggfather. 150+ years old and it is a state secret!! Any way around that problem? Bill Dalton in Gig Harbor, Washington
