The info re removal of graves in 1928 from St. Joseph to Calvary may have cleared up a mystery for me. My Matthew & Elizabeth Corcoran were moved to Calvary 11 June 1928 and buried with a Patrick Hogan who d 14 June 1928 at age 50. Have never been able to find any Ohio or Cleveland death record of Mr. Hogan. Have no idea who he is. So some mystery still remains. Carolyn Corcoran
Mary Ellen -- Now if only my little RV can get out of Legends repair shop -- we can have all the comforts of home while we explore cemeteries, etc. And my brother has been bugging me for years to take some digital photos of houses & locations of family history, & he'll publish them on his web site. We even have a web address, but the site's under construction. Eventually, it'll we at www.KingFamily.com -- for KING, MORAN, WALSH, HUNTER, HUDSON, HORAN -- and all the other Irish families that the gazillion offspring married in to. Will do. We were down there at pre Christmas to take pictures to send to family in Ireland re: the Famine Memorial. Around 9 in the AM seems to have less traffic. Also, another time looking for Mulberry with one of nuns from St. Malachi's. After 11 it gets trafficky. Mary Ellen
Mary Ellen, Would possibly be interested in a look at the flats also. Let me know when and if your going and maybe we will join you. Marlene. N. Royalton
Karen~ I will let you know when we go exploring! I want to do some ANGLE exploring too. Like to go early in morning before the trucks are out an about in the Flats. Get back to you! Mary Ellen
Will look for it on our next trip out. When I have it, I'll let you know. Mary Ellen
Pat~ Not sure of other records beside their own that might be at Calvary. I do know the transfer happened because of notes we have on original grave deed that my mother-in-law had and now we have for a large family plot re: it. In one family plot, the grave stone reads the late 1890s dates of death for children who died from the flu epidemic. Mary Ellen
Pat -- The neighborhood isn't wonderful, but . . . you can get in to these closed cemeteries -- they're just not ATTENDED except for those few days a year. So. Speaking as a retired social worker who knows the neighborhood -- go before noon on a fairly nice day, take a friend, take a cell phone. (I know it's not etiquette, but when I go alone, I take my dog. BIG dog! And I'm there for a very short time. MUCH more comfortable to be there with friends!) Warm regards, Karen P.S. And thanks again to Judith, from this list, who showed me HOW to search a cemetery, how to estimate where unmarked sections would be located, how to take pictures. How to be careful WALKING through the cemetery. Safety issues! If someone here wants a companion to either St. John's or St. Joseph -- let me know. I need to check out who is buried NEAR our MORAN and WALSH plot. We just found out the maiden name of my great-great-grandmother -- and it would be GREAT if we found HER parents there, too. Ahhhhh. If your're going to dream, dream BIG! Both are on Woodland Ave. in Cleveland. St. Joe's is at about East 79th St., and St. John's is about East 66th, right down the street. St. John's is nowhere near the St. John's Cathedral. Both have limited days in which you can "drive in" to the property. Due to the crime in the neighborhood, the Cemetery Association only opens these cemeteries to car traffic on eight days a year: Mother's & Father's Day, Memorial Day, Palm & Easter Sundays, and one Sunday in June, July, & August. I have not heard of any remains being moved to Calvary Cemetery from St. Joe's. My great-great grandfather is buried in St. Joe's, and his father is in St. John's. Neither one of them was living in the Angle at the time of their death. I do know that all inquiries regarding these two cemeteries should be directed to the Calvary office, as that is where all the plot records are kept. My great grandfather Hugh Corrigan was moved from St. Joseph's to Calvary in 1929 also. His wife Sarah Forry Corrigan Gordon died in Sept. of that year and there were no more burials permitted at St. Joseph's so his remains were moved to a family plot at Calvary. In 1928 Railroad tracks were laid at the South end of St. Joseph's Cemetery. Graves in that area were moved to Calvary Cemetery. My great grandmother Mary Burke and one of her sons, and his wife, and an infant grandchild were part of that reburial. The records show that the remains of all 4 bodies were placed in one box, and buried in Sec. 23, lot 150. Jim
The last email address that I have for Calvary is jltomaro@cle-dioc.org........don't know if this will help you or not. Not sure if she is still there. Catholic Cemeteries has a small booklet "Celebrating God's Blessings". (About 62 pages) It was published to celebrate 150 years (1847-1997). It is very interesting reading about the history of the Catholic cemeteries, early Catholic burials and how people were moved from the Erie St Cemetery when St. John's was established. Also gives information about burial traditions, etc and goes into detail about St. John's, St. Joseph's and Calvary. I'm assuming this booklet is free for the asking.
Can't seem to find an email address for Calvary Cemetery. Does anyone know if there is one???? Will they search old records of ancestors from a list I send them???? I'm visiting Cleveland in September and am planning my attack.....Thanks for any info out there. Lynne
My great, great grandparents Michael Peter and Alice Heffernan Keyes were moved 3-20-1928 from St. Joseph's Woodland to Calvary Cemetery, Sec. 23, Lot 27. Boy, would I like a picture of that grave!!!!
Thanks for the reply, but my Mary Callahan Keyes born in 1866,died in 1904. She and her parents too old for a connection. LYnne

About 1929, many people who were buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery were moved to Calvary Cemetery. Both my husband and my family had ancestors moved. Does anyone know the reason? Does this St. Joseph Cemetery still exist? Would this or St. John's Cemetery be the most common cemetery for Irish in the Angle? Where is St. John's Cemetery? Would it be considered the Cathedral cemetery? Did the old St. Bridget's have a cemetery similar to other churches in the 19th century? My sister has moved to Ohio City. She and her husband are having a great time walking throughout the area. They found a small Jewish Cemetery and another one whose name does not connote a Catholic cemetery. Does anyone have any idea or history re: these cemeteries in Ohio City. It was the subject of a grand discussion Saturday night over a good bottle of wine and looking out over the city of Cleveland from a 5th floor loft apt. at the old Fries and Scheule (SP?) Bldg. Hi Judy! It may have been me. You found data re: my great grandparents Henry Thomas FRIEL and his wife Margaret (nee COONEY). It was a death certificate for their youngest daughter Margaret who died at about 20 days old. They lived in the Angle at a few different addresses on Washington Street and also Mulberry (per my mother). Margaret (Peggy) died in 1909. In the 1900 Census her brother Edward is living with them, a man of approx. 65 years of age. He is not in the 1910 census. By the 1920 census my great grandfather is living with his daughter Agnes and husband KENNEDY on Joan Ave. in St. Ignatius Parish. Oral history has that both my g grandparents had siblings living in Cleveland. I just can't get a definite connection to any FRIEL or COONEY. The COONEY origins are Achill and the FRIEL are the Westport area, possibly Bohea. Both per census emigrated here in 1865. They were married at St. Malachi's in 1870. An old picture I have, has a man, my mother identified as Mike FRIEL, my grandfather Anthony (Tony) FRIEL'S cousin. Also, my mother said her Gran had a brother John COONEY who she thinks married a FRIEL. The records on Achill for my great grandmother are nil until I can come up with more sibling/parents names or nicknames since she was born pre 1864. COONEY is such a common name there and here! As an aside, my cousin Martin MCFADDEN in Streamstown, is married to an Ann COONEY (no relation) from Achill! Mary Ellen Chambers
I have a James P. COONEY who married into the family. He married Catherine Callahan . Let me know if you connect to him in your search. I also have my husband's g,g,grandmother, Anna June BURNS born 1851 in Canada, daughter of Patrick BURNS and unknown mother (from her death certificate). She married John MCKENNA on July 5, 1867. They lived on Mulberry in the angle. I have not been able to find any record of her father or any siblings. In your searching for BURNS have you come across this family?
