    2. Thanks Pat. I'm trying to keep a record of the approx. marriage dates so there isn't so much guess work and I don't have anyone that far back yet. This will be of value if I'm tying to help someone else. Annie

    1. Owen Haney
    2. HOWARD GILLIHAN
    3. Annie, I am researching two branches of Haney families trying to find a connection. I have an Owen Haney married to Sheila Cooney, probably in Ireland. Son Michael, born in Achill abt. 1845 married to Nora McManaman. Lived in Nebraska and Cleveland. I also am researching the family of Patrick Haney of Cleveland, also born between 1845-1855 in Ireland. His brief death notice has a note, "Nebraska and Kansas newspapers, please copy". Does your Owen Haney have any connections in Nebraska or Kansas? Other surnames are English, McCrann. ----- Original Message ----- From: SRXMD@aol.com Date: Saturday, July 19, 2003 12:31 pm Subject: Re: COONEY family in Cleveland in 1850s > Janet, > > Did Margaret marry Owen in Ireland or in Cleveland? 3. Annie, Owen and Margaret were married in Cleveland on May 29, 1851 -- I have both their civil and religious marriage certificates. This site will tell you the years that correspond with the volumes of the marriage index: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~officer/CuyOhMarIndx.html Janet

    2. Janet, Did Margaret marry Owen in Ireland or in Cleveland? The two on the Historical Marriages site show a Vol. 0005. This site starts in 1810. Wouldn't that vol. # have them getting married in 1810? My great-grandmother, Catherine Gallagher's parents were Owen Haney and Celia Cooney from Achill. That's all I know about them. Annie

    1. COONEY family in Cleveland in 1850s
    2. Janet
    3. I'm hoping that perhaps one of the COONEY researchers can help me out. I just learned today that my gr gr grandmother was definitely Margaret COONEY and not Margaret Burns as I had thought for more than 20 years. I'm not exactly back to square one in my research, because I had never been able to locate any information on Margaret Burns. My gr gr grandfather was Miles GOLDRICK, born in Ireland in 1833. What is most curious is that his older brother Owen, b. 1824, was also married to a woman named Margaret COONEY. They were married in St. John Cathedral on May 29, 1851. I am now wondering if perhaps the two Margarets were cousins. I do not have a marriage record for Miles GOLDRICK and Margaret COONEY. However, her name is given on the baptismal certificates for 4 of their children recently obtained from the Diocese. Margaret COONEY who married Owen GOLDRICK was also known as Maria. She was born in Ireland about 1834. Margaret COONEY who married Miles GOLDRICK was born in Ireland about 1836. That's pretty much all I know about these women ... I'm hoping someone researching COONEYs in Cleveland can help me sort them out. Thanks for any help or advice you can provide. Janet Goldrick Friend

    1. copies of death notices from Cleveland News Index

    3. Thanks, Judith -- Several years ago, somewhere on the Cleveland News Index web page, there were actual instructions and costs for the library to make copies -- and where to send the request, to whose attention, etc. I know I'm getting older (:-) so when I couldn't find what I KNEW was there, I had to ask for help. Thanks again. On that page, you will see a link to the Cleveland News index, to check fro deaths after 1975. The necrology file contains all of the info. For the Cleveland News Index, you will need to contact the newspaper-- very pricey-- or a library to make a copy & mail it to you. It is not available online. I am sure Cleveland Public will send it. I usually ask Cuy. County Public's Fairview Park Branch-- their regional specialty is genealogy. They used to copy & send for free. With the current budget issues, they may not be able to do that anymore, so I would suggest sending a SASE with $.25 per page to cover their costs. 2. Hello Ed and all, Could not find Mary & Patrick, or Mary & Edward on the Marriage Index. They didn't seem to come out of hiding until the 1930 Census ED 108 1298 W. 28th St. Edward O'Donnell 51yrs Retired To US in 1900 - North Ireland Mary - wife - 45yrs. - To US in 1900 - North Ireland Children: Julia 22yrs. Edward 16yrs. Anna 12yrs. Martin 9yrs Tillie 18yrs. The deaths of Edward & Mary confirm this is the right family. I went there as it confused me that they listed ' North Ireland' as where they lived before coming to the US. Only one Edward arrived in 1900 at Ellis. He was 21 yrs. & sailed on on the Servia, June 18, 1900 Going to a cousin: Mr. Howell (?) Detroit Ave., West Cleveland. He left ' Snowhill', which is in Co. Fermanagh. This is Ulster, I think. This doesn't have to be your Edward. The age and date matched that's all. There were 260 Patrick O'Donnells and 538 Mary O'Donnells. Here's one that may belong to one of you. May 11, 1901 Campania Mary O'Donnell 21 yrs. Left Newport Going to cousin: Mrs. Duffy 120 E. Riverside, Cleveland, OH Hope this helps someone. Annie Drews Strongsville, OH

    3. Hi Karen, Thats an interesting concept, thanks for sharing that. Unfortunately my mother was a Gibbons, not my father so I don't qualify. I know there were several Gibbons families in and around the Angle at the turn of the century. Who knows, maybe some of your Gibbons' are the same as mine. I would be happy to compare notes with you, who knows. Thanks, Cliff Fortune Kansas City, MO. -----Original Message----- From: karen [mailto:karen@HiattFamily.com] Sent: Friday, July 04, 2003 12:09 AM To: OH-CLEVELAND-IRISH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: GIBBONS family DNA testing I received an e-mail from Dennis West on the RootsWeb Gibbons list -- and he is looking for MALE participants (needs NINE of them) who are descended father-to-son in an unbroken line for several generations. (And he's not being sexist -- the genetic markers that are tested are on the Y chromosome) If you are interested, please contact him directly. We're still looking for OUR Gibbons family members -- and all known to us right now are women. It's a challenge! Warm regards, Karen ****** From: <dwest3@utk.edu> To: <GIBBONS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 7:16 PM Subject: [GIBBONS] DNA testing for genealogy Good Evening cousins: I am wondering if we have enough interest to start a GIBBONS surname DNA project. I am coordinating a DNA project for the WEST surname and would be happy to do the same for our GIBBONS surname. The test most widely used is the Y-STR (for Y chromosome, Short Tandem Repeats) which test the male chromosome. Since it uses the Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son unchanged for generations, only living males with the GIBBONS surname (or a variant spelling like GIBBINS, GIBENS, etc.) would be able to submit a DNA sample. The DNA test does NOT tell you who your ancestor was or where he originated, though there is some interesting associated information on deep ancestral origins (thousands of years ago). The value of the DNA test comes when the results from one GIBBONS male are compared with the results from another GIBBONS male. If the two samples match, then they are assured that they share a common ancestor. It would still require traditional genealogy research to find that ancestor, but each person may have information that the other did not have. The test costs $169 for a 25 marker genetic test. There is a test for $99 that test only 12 markers, but the number of false positives is too high for reliability with the smaller number of markers. The sample collection is very easy, a swab is used wipe the inside of the cheek (no blood needed). You can see photos of Bob Dorsey collecting his sample for the DORSEY DNA project at this site: http://davedorsey.com/dna.html If you do not have a living male GIBBONS in your line, you could try to find a distant male cousin descended from the same line and ask him to participate. If we can get about 10 people willing to submit a DNA sample, I will set up a surname project at Family Tree DNA http://www.familytreedna.com/ I have sample number one from one of my GIBBONS uncles, so we need nine more people. There are several webpages with excellent explanations of DNA for genealogy research, here are a few. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics.html http://blairgenealogy.com/dna/dna101.html http://www.kerchner.com/kerchdna.htm Please contact me if you or someone from your line would be willing to submit a sample. Also send me any questions you may have. Dennis West in Knoxville TN
