    1. Cleveland City Directories
    2. I have had very good luck in finding information found in the city directories by contacting the Cuyahoga County Archives. What I have done is ask for a photocopy of the page/pages with the surname that I am interested in for a specific year or span of years. That way, you will have a listing for any relatives with the same surname that you do not know of at the time of the request. The charge has been something like 25 cnets per page. I do not have the URL for the archives, but a google search should easily turn it up. Bill Dalton

    3. I have seen them from time to time offered for sale on Ebay. I bought several of them on microfilm several years ago (but I have to take them to the library to read) There are also a number of them on some of the genealogy websites --- AncestryPlus and HeritageQuest. I don't know about any other CDs. 1. Re: Cleveland City Directory listings for McManaman (rel. to MURPHY & GALLAGHER)
    2. Thanks, Janet There is every possibility that both of the listings are my Thomas McMANAMAN. Both are new to me and I appreciate your kind offer & your time. Thomas name is found under several incorrect spellings in Cleveland records. His m. rec. to Anna MURPHY showed McMannum. The Church record showed McManum for both Thomas & his witness, Michael McMANUM. The birth of the first daughter gives the name as McMANAMY and again Michael, a sponsor, is spelled the same way. I'd guess Michael was Thomas's brother. I suspect they may have been together before Thomas' 1856 marriage to Anna MURPHY. The only City Directory address that I have and am sure of was the 1875-6 listing: McMANEMAY, Thos. Lab. r. 85 Gordon av. I would not have taken this for McManaman except that the address was given on the birth record for his youngest daughter, Anna, on Jan 7, 1877. It is the only Cleveland record where the name McMANAMAN was spelled correctly. Wedding witnesses: Michael McManum & Anna Galligan (McMANAMAN & GALLAGHER?) Anna Murphy's mother was Mary GALLAGHER (Mrs. John MURPHY) Baptismal witnesses: Michael McMANAMY & Bridget KERINS (McMANAMAN & KERNS?) John & Catherine GALLAGHER Patrick & Bridget FERGUS John MURPHY & Catherine SLEVIN (Anna's brother) Patrick & Anna KERNS (KERINS?) Michael & Katherine GAVIN Thanks again, Jo

    3. I'm searching for McNallys and just came across another possibility: McManamna, Thomas, laborer, house Taylor n. Herman -- this was in the 1863-64 Cleveland City Directory. Will let you know if I run across any other possibilities -- or maybe you have already seen these ... Janet

    2. Thanks Alice, Who knows? Maybe Thomas & your James were kin. since I do not know his place of birth we may never discover the connection. My Gallagher was Ann Murphy's mother. Ann & Thomas McManaman m. in Cleveland in 1856. Their oldest daughter, Mary Ann, m. John McCarty there in 1876-7 as well. Jo

    2. It must have been a very small boarding house, as I could not find it listed. I also checked under the names, none are listed on that street.

This was not done until 1930. You have to know the person's name. Just having an address will not help. Carolyn

    1. Re: OH-CLEVELAND City Dir for 1867-8
    2. Hi Christina! Would it be possible to check for a boarding house on Case Avenue? I don't know if you can do that since the directories are usually done by name. The names Thorpe, Cuffe, Mahon, or Sweeney might be possibilities. My great-grandmother was orphaned and came from Ireland in the early 1860's to live with her mother's sister who ran a boarding house on Case Avenue. I would love to find out the name of that aunt as it might give me a clue about my great-great-grandmother's maiden name if that aunt was unmarried. Thanks! Ceal

    2. Hi Christina, Would you please check for Thomas McMANAMAN. I know he was there as he had children born both before & after that date. However, I have encountered numerous misspellings of the surname in records I have searched previously. It may be a larger task than it appears. Thanks for the offer, Jo
