    2. Loretta~ There are lists on rootsweb, com for Canada, most probably one for the predominantly French areas. You could send a message to those sites asking about census, directories, etc., for the 1840s. However, don't get your hopes up that there are any 1840 records around. Then, again, you might get lucky. Since my husband's great grandparent's literally were dumped in Canada in 1847 after their ship was turned away at Boston due to Cholera. (The only one recorded to have been refused at Boston during Black '47.) We have tried to research their time in Canada, border crossings etc. The information we received was very few lists were kept of emigrants at that time. Basically, there were no records available. As to crossing the border, we again were told no records were kept. They made their way to the USA, relatives already in Boston and eventually, by about 1850 to western Maryland. There are numerous sites for Canada and genealogy there, English and French. Use Canada Genealogy as keywords or try GOOGLE. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio

    3. My gg grandfather, Thomas Dowe, emmigrated from Ireland to french Canada in the 1840's. From there my g grandfather immigrated to Cleveland around 1865. Can any one tell me where a likely place was where people came over the border? I understand that it was just a matter of hopping over the border, no paperwork involved. I don't know where they lived in Canada (except it was french) and am grasping at straws, as to where to look for them . Thanks to anyone who might help. Loretta Wilhelm in Seattle

    2. Pat~ Thanks so much. My uncles were firefighters, Captain Bill LIBENS and Lieutenant Jack LIBENS (Arson squad). It is my g grandfather, their grandfather I am trying to track. The 1871 Directory has him living on Main St. occupation a seaman which is correct- John TOWNSEND. However, his wife and children lived in what is now Linndale. They owned 10 lots there. He went down with his ship in 1875. I wonder if there were boarding houses or accommodations for lake sailors in that area, at that time? Mary Ellen Chambers

    1. Re: 19th Century Cleveland Street Dilemma
    2. Mary Ann..........I'm assuming that the streets you are trying to locate are the same ones of today since you state that they did not change names on the 1906 list. Main Street runs east from W. 25th St to the River. It "vees" off of and runs almost parallel with Washington, which is the street north of St. Malachi's. Dudley runs west off of W 73rd St. and is about the 4th street south of Madison Ave. Apple is the first street south of Lorain running east off of W. 44th St. Waverly Ct is a teeny tiny street just south of Detroit running west off of W 58th St. I have no idea what Ry. Island would be. My husband, Jim, has never heard of it either. He grew up on the near west side and was a Cleveland Firefighter (they have to know all of the street locations)............Pat

    1. 19th Century Cleveland Street Dilemma
    2. Does anyone have any idea where these streets were located in the 1870s? I have the 1906 changes; they were not changed. Main Street (W. S.) Dudly, (W. C.) Apple Ave. Waverly Ry. Island (can't find any listing. Assume it might have been in or near the Angle) Streets listed in City Directories between 1871 and 1887. Also, have tried the Cuyahoga County Archives, Western Reserve Historical Society and Fairview Library but no luck unless I am JUST not looking in the correct places; newspapers, records, necrology files. I need information on shipping disasters for ships out of Cleveland in 1875, bringing back sulfur for the Steel Companies. Lists of casualties, sailors, crew. Cannot locate any death certificate for my g grandfather or information re: his death. Where would archives exist? How would a widow be able to probate property without some type of record in 1875? The property remained in family until 1944. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood, OH

    1. Gallagher, Masterson, Calvey Families
    2. Peggy Wolf
    3. I am interested in tracing my Great Grandfather, Thomas Gallagher came from Ackhill Island Ireland via Canada. Had a sister Margaret married the Gaughdy's brother. Some counsin were J.F.Gallagher who was a Priest at Holy Name Church in 1884. My Great Grandfather and Grandmother Bridget Masterson were married by J.F. Gallagher on Dec 1, 1884. Michael Gallagher (a cousin was known as "Big Mike" tall, ruddy faced, heavy set person was witness. Also at their wedding as a witness was Bridget sister Mary Masterson. Bridget and Mary had a brother Patrick. Their mother had remarried name of Calvey. The story goes that she had gold sewed into her hem of dress and her nephew who was a Charlie (?) Masterson, her sponsor, took her to bank, Society for Savings on west side of Cleveland, and convinced her that he would be her trustee. The gold pieces fell all over the floor of the bank. She eventually went to live with daughter. I would like to know more about Gallagher's, Masterson's and Calvey's. Great, Great Grandmother Calvey had land in Ireland, sold it to the railroad, paid in gold. My Great Grandfather, Thomas and Great Grandmother Bridgit, lived on Dunlap St, Etna St, lived near Slovak Church that house burned down moved to St. Catherine St. Area was called Newburgh Town. They had Margaret (1886), Honora called Nora (1901) Mae (Sister Mary of the Incarnation - Ursaline nun) Ella (Sister Mary Josephine (Ursaline nun) Joseph called Dodie (1889), Patrick (1888), Michael called Mick married Lenore, Elizabeth called Bess married Walter Miles, Ann Cecelia (1995) my Grandma married Floyd Murdock, John (1898), Catherine (1896) called Cate married Tom Goff. All buried in Calvary Cemetary. My father did tell me that Calvey cousin morried Sorgey and one married Lavelle's. And third cousin Bernie Lavelle picked up a bottle of gasoline and it exploded and he was burned bad. My Dad thinks he remembers the Masterson's may have come from Cork but I can't substantiate that. Appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you. Peggy Murdock Wolf

    1. SAMMON/SWEENEY
    2. I am starting two new surnames in my research. A year ago, my youngest son married a lovely young lady with the two main surnames of SAMMON and SWEENEY on her maternal side. Her great great grandfather was Alexander SAMMON either from Mayo or Roscommon. He married Bridget SWEENEY either in Ireland or after they emigrated to Cleveland. Following the time line back, it seems this couple probably were born in the 1840/1850s. Her great grandmother (b. about 1880), grandmother (b. 1916) and mother (b. 1956) were all born in Cleveland area. They may have originally been "Angle" Irish. I've checked Griffith's Valuation but only SAMMON listed in Mayo was a Mary SAMMON in the Castlebar area. The family has ties to many in the greater Cleveland area with Mayo links. Roscommon was a county name that came up in discussion. I decided to start with the close to home research first and then work out. Does anyone on the Cleveland list have data that might be pertinent or give me a direction to pursue? We were just about to have our tree printed when a "light" bulb went on! Someday we may have grandchildren who want to know their mother's family story as well as their father's! Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio

Anne MURPHY, b. abt. 1837, IRE. They m. at St. John Cathedral on Dec. 23, 1856, in Cleveland. Her sister, Catherine MURPHY, b. 1842, was m to Peter McGINTY, b. abt. 1838. They m. in 1859.
