    2. Janet,I would really appreciate it if you could take a quick glance for a James and Bridgette Kirk, Children Catherine, Sade, & William. As far as I can assume is that they lived the in part of Cleveland called the Angle, as most Irish. They were definitely Shanty Irish. If this is an impossible task don't worry. As far as dates the only thing I do know is Catherine was born in 1879 and Sade in 1883. Thank you and if there is a charge please let me know. Marlene

    3. I hope a number of people on this list took the time to thank Eleanor privately for transcribing the names of this regiment. Although I personally have no one (that I know of yet) who served in this particular regiment, I do know that it took Eleanor quite a bit of time to locate the information and transcribe it (or even just to forward it). I know that Eleanor did this just to help the rest of us, but a word of thanks is always appreciated. I did appreciate the thanks of those of you I was able to assist with my census research. I still have one more roll to look at and I've found the whole experience very educational with regard to customs of the 1870s. For example, I found a "Home for Fallen Women" with the names of all of the "Fallen" listed along with their ages and birthplaces. When I later came upon 3 women in another ward whose profession was listed as "prostitute" I wondered how I would have felt if I had encountered an ancestor ... no, none of the names any of you sent me to look up were listed there either... Again, my thanks to Eleanor for her efforts .... Janet

    3. Hello Karen, You might want to check with Cleveland Public Library, Cuyahoga County Historical Society and other local Cleveland folks and see if someone has a photographic collection taken during the period of time that you are interested in. I am having some success finding stores and street views of my family areas from Columbus Ohio. Got a lead from the Ohio State Historical Society and the Columbus Public Library on several hundred photos taken from 1880s through WW I. Same type of photos may exist for Cleveland, it a place to start looking. 3. Charges actually vary for OH death certificates. Several years ago, the legislature passed a law limiting charges for copies to the actual cost of the copy. Death records prior to 1908 are held at County Probate Courts & their designates-- (in Cuyt. County, they are at the Archives; in Stark, at the Library; in Summit, at Probate Court, for example); cost is usually around $.25-- send a SASE with your inquiry. From 1908-1944, all OH death records are held at the Ohio Historical Society, and cost about $3.00 each. They have an index on the web which will allow you to provide the certificate number and limit your cost. If you live nearby, and can travel to either Columbus or Youngstown, you can do it yourself for $.25 each. This is the web address that tells you about OH vital records. http://www.vitalrec.com/oh.html#State Ignore the costs listed for birth & death records after 1944, however. They readjusted downwards and have not corrected their website info. After 1944, If you send for a non-certified copy from the OH Dept of Health, the charge is less than $.25-- I don't remember the exact amount. The minimum is $1.00. Have fun & happy hunting. 3. I thought I'd send this along to those who are interested in doing research in Euclid. The Library is located on Lake Shore Blvd but there's plenty of parking in back. Cindy ****** Forwarded Message Follows ******* Cindy, Thank you for your message. The Padraic Pearse Library is an all volunteer library which carries only Irish and Irish American books, periodicals and videos. There are a few items of genealogical interest, such as the surname histories by MacLysaght, and the 3vol. set of Irish passenger lists. We also carry Irish Roots magazine, and the Eire-Ireland Journal which may have articles of interest. The library is located in the lower level of the Irish American club and is open Wed. & Friday evenings, 7:30-9:30 p.m. There is no charge for non-members, but identification is required for a library card to be issued. You may be limited to three books as there are limited copies available. There are a lot of how-to books for researching within the different counties of Ireland. On the last Friday of the month, there is a "Genealogy Night" when two volunteers who know a lot about Irish sources will answer questions. Here at the Western Reserve Historical Society, there is a wealth of information availabe. First of all, you would be very interested in a collection that I am processing. The name will be the Duncan McFarland Family Papers. A history of Bluestone, by a recent author and apparently unpublished, is part of the collection. It tells what life was like in the area, long before its annexation to Cleveland. There are all sort of resources for finding relatives, including birth and death records, census information, city directories, old newspapers etc. There is a charge for visiting the WRHS library ($7.50) as we are not publicly funded. The people at the Reference desk are trained to help people locate sources for information. I would encourage you to visit if you have not been here. I am not sure when I will be finished with the McFarland papers; there is a microfilm of the daughters diaries 1873-1877 which can be viewed. I work on several collections simultaneously, and actually I am holding this as the McFarland home is in the process of being considered for preservation. You can try e-mailing me back in a month or so to see where things are at. I didn't see any of the names you mentioned in the brief look I gave it. I would be interested in what you find out.
