    2. M. E. Potter
    3. Hi Carolyn: Welcome to the List. I have one Corcoran connection in my database (which consists mainly of Gallaghers)--Mary Campbell, daughter of Elizabeth (Gallagher) Campbell and Unknown Campbell, married a Corcoran (first name unknown) and had three children: Mary, Margaret and Owen. Elizabeth would have been born sometime in the 1820s or so, so Mary Campbell was born somewhere in the late 1840s or early 1850s. I have no Egan or Ryan connections, or Barnes (Barrons) from the Cleveland area, but here are my Murphys: (1) Catherine Casey, daughter of Peter and Mary (Scahill) Casey married John E. Murphy on 30 August 1920 in Lakewood. They had no children. (2) Jennie Murphy married Mike Barrett, son of Thomas and Bridget (Gallagher) Barrett, and they had four children: Dorothy, Frank, Jean and Miriam. Mike Barrett married (2) May Connelly Sheehan. Mike's parents, Thomas and Bridget, were married on Feb. 4, 1861, so Mike would have been born in the 1880s probably. 2. Joseph R. Egan
    3. Hi Carolyn, I have Egan family in Ohio. My great-uncle Joseph Henry Egan came to Cleveland Heights in the 1890s from the Boston, MA area. He was born 01 September 1878 in Cooneal, Ballysakeery Parish, Co. Mayo, Ireland. His parents were Patrick Egan and Bridget Melvin. He died 25 September 1952 in Euclid, Ohio. He married Sophia Miller about 1905 in Cleveland, OH. He had two children, Alice Rose, born 28 July 1908 and Joseph John, born 30 July 1912. Both children were born in Cleveland. Alice Rose married Ralph Buescher and Joseph John married Eleanore Weber. Joseph Henry Egan had the following siblings: John, Michael James, Peter Francis (my grandfather), Patrick William, Sarah Josephine, Mary Frances, Bridget Veronica, and Agnes Catherine. My grandfather and Patrick Wm. lived in Cleveland for a couple of years in the late 1890s. Any possible connection? 1. SWEENEY, BROUGHAN, SHARKEY, NOLAN Cleveland and Euclid 1840-1920
    2. Sean Mac Suibhne
    3. Hello to everyone, Thought I'd repost my surnames just in case someone out there this summer finds themselves working on one of these families. Micheal and Bridget (McCart) Sweeney came from Ireland possibly Donegal 1840 and lived in Cleveland. Michael later bought land in Bluestone, Euclid with his sons Patrick, Alex ander & daughter Mary who married Michael Broughan sometimes Brougham. They owned land next to James & Margaret (nee Sweeney) Sharkey & John& Jane (nee Curran) Sharkey. Other related surnames are Nolan, FitzPatrick, Sullivan, Daugherty, Hogan, Weisbart, (hey! how'd those germans get into this Irish family) most of these people are buried at St. Paul's Cemetery in Euclid. If your summer research leads to these families I'd love to hear from you. Take care, Cindy Mac Suibhne [email protected]

    3. John, it depends on when you mean. In the 1870 census the wards only went up to 15. However, in the 1880 census there was an 18th ward. --Janet

    1. Re: Ward Map
    2. If you find the Ward that your family lived in, then you need to the enumeration number. I have done some search at the Fairview Park Library. This helps narrow down your search so you don't have to view the entire roll of film. Colleen

    3. Hello all. In answer to the question on ward maps-- in the early census days in Cleveland, the enumeration disctricts were based on the political wards people lived in. If you needed to order a roll of microfilm, for example, and knew your family lived in a certain ward, that would tell you which roll to search. The map would tell you which streets fell into a ward-- this changed over time, of course. So, if you had an address, you could find the ward, then the roll, etc. There are surname indexes for all Ohio census records through 1880, fyi. 3. I'm not sure I can give a definitive answer. "Wards" are political subdivisions of a city. If you know what ward your family lived in, you can narrow down the actual area in which they lived. This knowledge can also help you if you are doing census research. The census information was collected by wards for the larger cities like Cleveland. Unless you want to search through the entire census which can be quite a few rolls, you really have to know the ward where your family lived. I found out that my relatives lived in either Ward 5 or Ward 7 in 1870, so I purchased the rolls of microfilm that covered those particular wards. I actually found the census information for my gggrandparents listing all their children and confirming that they had been born in Ireland. By searching through the films, I also located some other people whom I THINK were relatives and I'm presently trying to confirm that. I hope this helps to answer your question. --Janet

    1. Cuyahoga County Vital Records
    2. Janet
    3. I recently found an index to Cuyahoga County birth records online. It seems to contain birth records for 1881-1884 and 1887-1889 and death records from the Index to Probate Court Records, 1867-1890. I found death records for 5 of my relatives and was able to email the information to the folks at the Cuyahoga County Archives and they are sending me the death records. These researchers at the County Archives answered me promptly and they didn't even demand my money up front! The address for these records is: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/cuyahoga/vitals/ I hope this helps some of you who don't live in the Cleveland area with your research. Janet

    3. Vickie (and anyone else who is interested), I don't charge for lookups. I am doing my own personal research trying to find my ancestors among the Irish in Cleveland. When I started looking at the census material, I discovered that I would really have to scan through every name because of all the strange ways the census takers had of spelling and recording the information. So as long as I have to look at all the names anyway, I might as well help the rest of you out as well. I can't guarantee I'll find anything ... as I mentioned in some earlier postings, with some of the Irish people the census takers showed a certain prejudice and just recorded their last names as "Irish" or even "Irishman". I'll let you know what I find. --Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: VICKIE L KNIGHT <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 21, 2000 4:58 PM Subject: Re: 1880 Census index + more info on 1850 and 1870 census > Janet, > > I'm interested in the Hallisy name.
