    3. I have had some correspondence with the Diocesan Archives as well. They require a research fee for their services-- it is not a donation. They will bill you after the research is done, depending on the time it took them. They do not send photocopies of originals, just transcribe the information. You do not need to know the parish name. You DO need to give them the residence address of your folks as well as their dates-- approximate birth, death, or marriage. The reason for this is that churches were added continually. A family might be in one parish one year, but another 5 years later, while living at the same address. They kept no burial records until the end of the century, so if you need that, do not waste your time. You can ask for general name information. I had 3-4 sets of Allens on Franklin Ave/Franklin Alley and the researcher sent me all ALLEN records for that parish during my time frame. It may take several letters to get a response-- remember, they have considerably daily business to do that does not involve genealogy! If you contact the Catholic Cemeteries Association by mail, they request a $3.00 lookup per name. You may, however, provide a name and ask for all names & dates of those interred, if it is a family plot. They might be willing to send you nearby names as well; I have not tried that. If you go in person, the office at Calvary is open daily, half day Sat., no Sunday. Often, if they are not busy, they will just give you the information for a couple of names. All Cleveland cemeteries do not have offices and are not staffed. The older ones, like St. John's & St. Joseph's, have a staff member there only the first Sun. of the month during the summer. The gates are not locked, however, and you can go in to look around. You will need to have your map and location information already to do that. The Catholic cemeteries do not keep information on whether there is a monument or who paid for the plot, which some cemeteries do. Hope this helps some of you. Judith in Cuyahoga Falls OH

    2. Dear List Members, I have mainly dealt with the Diocese of Youngstown and I have always sent $20 or more, deaending on what I was asking for. I have always been very happy with what I have received back, also. Since the Catholic Churches have fallen in membership, they are really struggling. Youngstown has been very helpful and hopefully our donations will help to keep the worker in the office so that we can use them as a means of support in our research. Thought I'd throw my 2 cents worth in Best of luck in your research! 3. I have just joined this list and didn't get in on first of this discussion. Will you please explain how to get information from Cleveland Diocese? What would be considered an appropriate donation? Would this diocese also cover the Grafton area. I will appreciate any help you can give me on this. Janice

    3. For all of you who are still waiting to hear from me regarding my lookups for your family members ... I just wanted to let you know that I've just returned from a long and much needed vacation. I will now be returning to my census reading ... I was almost done with 1850 when I left, so if I can figure out my notes, I'll be emailing some of you with the results. I still have a little more to do before I move on. Thanks for your patience. -- Janet

    3. I was just at St. John's Cemetery - had a wonderful guide the first time, someone I "met" on this list. Then my husband and I went together, and I walked around the whole place. Lots of names that are in my family - I'm just not sure that these people are OUR people - yet! The Diocese took about a month to respond to my request, and wrote (TYPED!) a formal letter with all the info I needed, plus enclosed a map. [Here's another volunteer job for someone: scanning in all the cemetery maps for the Diocese. It would sure be quicker to be able to respond on line. And as long as we're wishing, let's look for all the burial records to be indexed/digital!] At St. John's, a lot of the section markers are missing, so sometimes it's hard to locate the site you want. And a lot of the grave stones have sunk and are covered with grass. But. If you've got the time, and a map, it's do-able. Next time, however, I'm going to enclose a donation with my request, and ask for some names buried in plots near "ours". At least then I'd know I was in the right section, especially in the "single grave" areas, which don't seem to have too many markers. And most of the ones I saw were so weathered, they weren't readable. Or maybe some are buried. Sure wish there were an easier way to locate grassed-over graves - something like a metal detector would be handy! Somebody else on the list [from out of town] had contacted the Catholic cemeteries association, and they actually sent a representative with him while he searched (he gave the guy a tip). I've found helpful people at the Diocese, and I think there's more gold in them thar hills! Best wishes on your search.
