Hello- Churches generally have birth, marriage and death records. Also confirmation and baptismal or communion records. They generally are pretty good and finding information. If not try the Cleveland diocese. M.
Hi, I have Doyles in Cleveland. I don't know much about them at all, but here goes. My Bridget Hackett (her brother was my g grandfather), was born in Ohio (probably), about 1865. She married Andrew Doyle and lived in Cleveland. She died in 1939 and is buried in Calvary. She lived on E 69th at the time of her death. Janet, I would greatly appreciate a look up (whenever you have time) for the 1870 Census for Cuyahoga County. William Hart Ward 7 Cleveland, page 236 My many thanks. Barb
Jim, 'Encouraged by your response to people inquiring about what parish their people belonged to, would you have a guess at a parish for our John Keating/Keaton/Caton and family? In the 1880 census they lived on Orlando St., which we think would have been Ward 18; in 1900 they had moved around the corner to 2059 Way St., Ward 26. John and wife Grace were both born in Ireland. Hi- Name Marlene. Family that lived in the Angle were Kirks. William and Bridget Kirk. Children, Agnes Catherine, Sarah Christine and William. William and Bridget were my Gr. Grandparents. Never knew them and information is scarce. Wrote to Cleveland Diocese and thought they attended St. Malachi's but found them at Ascension on W. 22nd st.
I don't know. I have several from 1955, 1956, and a few from 1957. I wonder if St. Malachi was the church she belonged to, do they have records? Have you checked other Cleveland Papers? It seems you have the date of her death correct. Jani
Is there any place that has copies of the Universe Bulletin for research purposes? Colleen
Thanks Janet. That was great of you to look for me. I bet its the one in Cuyahoga Co Ohio. Your great for doing that. Thanks again. Ruth
Thanks to all of you who gave me advice on how to obtain my family's records from the Cleveland City Directories and further advised me on how to get information on their parish in Cleveland. I live in New Jersey so I can't really reciprocate, but I do have lots of stuff where I could do lookups for you. I have: 1850 census for all of Cuyahoga County. I am currently going through it line by line. I have finished with Cleveland proper and am now searching the other townships, but I could go back to do a lookup if I can find them in the index or if you have a citation (preferably page # or at least the Ward) 1870 census for Wards 4, 5, 6, and 7. If I ever finish with the 1850 census, I will be going through this one line by line also. If I can locate someone in the index, I will look them up right away. 1880 census ... I have the complete Index for the entire State of Ohio and the actual microfilm for Cleveland wards 4 - 12. 1900 census. I have the index and rolls 1252 and 1254 for Cuyahoga County (not sure what wards these are) 1910 census. I have the rolls 1166 and 1167 and will be purchasing more. I also have a lot of FTM Irish passenger lists as well as the Passenger lists for Philadelphia, 1800-1850; Baltimore, 1820-1852; and Boston, 1821-1850. For the Irish folks, I have the "Index to Griffith's Valuation, 1848-1864" and FTM CD# 275 "Irish Source Records, 1500s-1800s" The CDs are easy to check, the microfilm takes a little (maybe a LOT) longer... Thanks again for your kindness and advice. Janet in Hunterdon Co., N.J.

Thanks Carolyn. I guess I will have to look in other citys for George Edmonson. Thanks again .
You can easily find out what parish your ancestors attended by writing the Diocesan Archives. Give them the address and the time from. These churches were built at different times-- a family might have belonged to one parish, never moved, and found themselves in another parish a few years later. They have records of that nature at the Diocese. Churches were Irish or Polish or whatever because of the neighborhood composition, not because someone made a decision to attend there because of their ethnicity. The church used to be very strict about attending outside the neighborhood parish, and parochial school attendance related very strictly to that. I belive also that Celveland State University published a book about the Irish in Cleveland a while back. Much of the inforamtion came from the Church; at least half the book concerned the church in Cleveland, when & how parishes were developed. Here is the information on it from the catalog at Kent State: Author Callahan, Nelson J Title Irish Americans and their communities of Cleveland / by Nelson J. Callahan, William F. Hickey ; with an introd. by Andrew M. Greeley Publish info Cleveland : Cleveland State University, 1978 You can try interlibrary loaning it through your local library or writing a library that owns it but will not loan it and ask them to look up something for you. Send a SASE for their trouble. There is NOT detailed stuff in here; but you will find talk about lace curtain Irish, the Angle, irishman's Bend, shanty Irish, etc. Good hunting. Judith in OH
