Janet, If you could, at your convience of course, that would be great. This is what I have: I've already found them on the 1900 census, Cleveland Twp, Ward 40 or 140, Vol 38 E.D. 199, Sheet 16, line 58. It shows: 1900: 27 Halle St Charles b. Jul 1874, age 25 Ohio, father Ireland, mother Canada, Brick Mason Nellie b. Sep 1875, age 24 Ohio, mother of 3/3, parents both born in Ireland Lizzie (Elizabeth) b. Aug 1894?, age 5, Ohio Charles b. Aug 1897, age 2, Ohio William (my grandfather) b. May 1900, Ohio and then Vincent wasn't listed because he wasn't born til Sep 1904. I found them on the 1910 census all broken up. And couldn't find anything else. I did make a copy of a page on the 1880 census that has alwayed had me puzzeled. And since the Halligans seem to have been in cleveland for so long, the more I think about it, I may be on the right track. 1880 Vol 12, Ed 14, Sheet 5 Line 39 shows the following: 326 Lake St, Cleveland HUlligan, William H.- WMM34. b. Canada, City Detective, parents born in Ireland Fannie Wife WFM34 b. Canada, Keeping House, F-Ireland M-Scottland William son 13 b. Ohio, at school Herbert son 11 b. Ohio, at school Gertrude daughter 8 b. Ohio, at school Mary F. duaghter 6 b. Ohio, at school Allen C. son 4 b. Ohio (COULD THIS BE MY CHARLES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR?...MAYBE THE "C" IS FOR CHARLES?) When I checked the 1900/1910 census.....I wonder if Fannie is the same person as the Mary HAlligan that continues to show up census after census, only10 years older each time some children drop and more children are added. All the ages seem about right and it would explain why I'm having difficulty finding anything. Also my family is said to have come from Ireland to Canada to Cleveland. Well that's where I'm stuck and have been for quite a while, so anything you can add would be great. I'm going to have to call my Aunt Jayne and ask her if she knows whether all the Cleveland Halligan's are related or not. Again thanks Colleen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2000 6:57 PM Subject: Re: Halligan > Colleen, > I don't know if you mentioned the names of all your Halligan's .. Yes Carolyn....that would be great. That one should show (if they are listed) my great grandmother Nellie Halligan. I know I found her on the 1910 census (listed as Willie) widowed with her daughter Elizabeth b. 1894 and the youngest son Vincent b. 1904 (it also said she was the mother of 5 with 4 living) and the I found my grandfather William b. 1900 and his brother Charles b. 1897 enumerated with Annastasia O'Neil in the St Vincent Orphan home. Based on Vincent's age it looks like Charles died between 1904 and 1910 because they were all together with the exception of Vincent who wasn't born til 1904 on the 1900 census. I'm also assuming the 5th child was born and died sometime between the two census reports. How did you connect DOYLE to MURPHY? Godparents were almost always relatives so here's maybe another connection to you. Carolyn Corcoran
Anyone looking for Lanigans in Cleveland? I'm trying to determine if the five Lanigans in Newburgh Twp. 1870 census pages 435-456 could possibly be brothers or cousins? It just seems odd that they all live in the same neighborhood and their ages are only a year or two apart. Pg.435 John age 39 " " Thomas age 37 Pg 436 Daniel age 35 Pg 443 Patrick age 36 Pg 456 Dennis age 41 John, Daniel, Patrick and Dennis all worked in the rolling mill; Thomas was a laborer. John is my great-great grandfather, so this would be a breakthrough if I could find a clue. Barb
Colleen, I don't know if you mentioned the names of all your Halligan's .. I have census indexes and some census rolls covering 1850-1900. Thank Carolyn.......The Halligan's sure are a mystery....there sure seems to be a lot of them in Cleveland but it's hard to find anything on any of them. The fartherest back I found in Cleveland was a Catherine b. 1833 Cleveland m. 1867 Ebenezer Dodd again Cleveland and d. 1889. I don't know if there's a link but it seems that with the exception of my dad they all seem to have been born, raised and died in Cleveland. WOODS (James, Jane SULLIVAN + children) were in Cleveland before 1865; MARTIN (THomas) & MILLIFF (John) came a couple fo years late-- they married WOODS girls. CUMMINGS (Michael) married the youngest girl and arrived in Cleveland by 1870. RIng any bells with anyone? Judith in OH

Tim - Go into the Ohio Historical Society web site <www.ohiohistory.org/> then click on Archivbes/Research Tools, then on Death Certificate Index. Then put in their names, period of death and the County. You will find both Bernard and Mary. (Mary's death date is 3/22/1921. For a dollar each you can get their death certificates and find out even more information. There should also be obituaries for both in either the Cleveland Press or Plain Dealer. Fellow Researchers -- I am seeking any information on my great-grandparents and aunt (or other relatives), who lived in Cleveland in the early 1900's. I have found them in the 1910 and 1920 census returns as follows: Bernard "Barney" Kane (my ggfather, b. Ireland, 1828-37, depending on which records you believe), and his wife: Mary (McKie/McKay) Kane (b. Ireland, 1832-41), in 1910 were living with their daughter Hannah (Kane, b. 17 May 1868, Gateshead, England) McGregor and her husband, James "Jimmy" McGregor (b. 1869, Ireland), who was a galvanizer in a factory. They were all living at 7904 Crumb Ave. NE in Cleveland. By the 1920 census, Barney had died, but Mary was still living with Hannah and Jimmy, now a factory stockkeeper, at the same home. Barney is believed to have died 28 May 1913, with services at St. Thomas Aquinas RC Church. Mary is believed to have died 2 Mar 1921 (no further info). Jimmy and Hannah are not known to have had any children (none are listed on the census records, although Hannah and Jimmy were in their 40-50's by then, so the kids could already have been gone). Am especially interested in any info before 1910 or after 1920 -- City Directories, obituaries, birth announcements, etc, as well as details of the deaths of Barney and Mary. I have written to the Cleveland Diocese but as yet have gotten no response. I've seen references on the List of the possibility of accessing the County Archives via e-mail. Can someone advise the correct address, etc. Your help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Tim Kane

Dear Listers, I think I have made a connection with a line of our family that had become lost to us, but I need to verify a few things. I would like to find an obit for Phillip Stark; he died January 1, 1908 and was buried at Harvard Grove January 6, 1908. I am looking for survivors names. Is there any kind of index to Probate records for that time period in Cuyahoga County? I know its a German name, but they really did marry Irish girls. Barb
Colleen - Women were not naturalized until the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920 (Women got the vote). Prior to that women considered themselves citizens when their husbands were naturalized.
