John G. Howard d. 19 March 1932 and wife Nora Gleason Howard d. 21 Nov 1927. Couldn't locate death certs on the OHS site. Was asking the church for the death record thinking they may have died on another state, even though the funeral were conducted at St. Augustine. Maureen I would love any help I can get from anywhere on this. Appreciate the offer. My letter was dated 13 Feb. 2000 and I asked for the death record for John G. Howard, d. 19 March 1932 and Nora Gleason Howard d. 21 Nov. 1927. (I have already tried OHS death record on line and didn't locate anything). Both funerals were conducted from St. Augustines. Also requested baptism certs. for John Howard b. July 1891, Nora Howard b. July 1894 & Margaret Howard b. March 1898 all in Cleveland. Also asked for church roll/membership when they became members as I was hoping it would show where in Ireland the parents were born. Carole, What are the names you are researching? Jani
Charlene, I have a George Quinn b. 1894 died 1984 in my database. He married Catharine Williams. Ring any bells. Holy Name sent me information on marriages years ago. They were very kind and sent me a history of the parish. I asked for specific "church records" like christenings and marriages for which I either had close or actual dates. A few years back, I tried to reach anyone in the Diocesan Offices, or at Holy Name Church who would reveal the existance of records. They both told me FIRMLY, that they had no records for genealogical research. If anyone can lead me to a contact, I would appreciate it. I am trying to get information on my great grandparents, Patrick QUINN and Mary or Maria BIGLIN. Patrick was born in Ireland in 1862, I am not sure if Mary was born in Ireland or in the US, in 1860. They married in Scranton, PA, May 23, 1886, moved to Cleveland between 1890 and 1892. They are on Hooper Street in Cleveland in 1900 census. I believe they were in Holy Name Parish well before 1920. Charlene: You might try to approach parish administrators/officials/pastors on an individual basis, and in person; In my experience, these folks are more likely to help you out if you're on their doorstep, and appear to be respectable/ friendly, etc. You are not looking for "genealogical" records; you are looking for "baptismal / funeral Mass / parish history" records. Speak the parish lingo. If you know a member of a parish, it also might help to get yourself "in the door." It also doesn't hurt to wear an article of clothing from your alma mater, if a graduate of Catholic high school/college (no joke!). If the parish whose records you are looking for no longer exists, you are at the mercy of the diocese office. Couldn't tell you what do there; I've never approached them for records. I have been allowed access to individual parish baptism and Catholic burial books (under supervision), and also have had parish staff volunteer parish histories and newsletters for study. All research must be done on-site(obviously), and you HAVE to have a specific information item(s) which you are searching for, and can cite relevant info, to put them at ease that you are not just "fishing." They really don't have time to search for you, or to watch over you for a lengthy period of time. Most parishes in the Cleveland diocese are on skeleton staff levels, and have only one or two priests assigned to them. The priests are very busy. The bottom line is, you just may have better luck at one parish than another(or from one parish worker to another). What is forbidden by one may be allowed by someone else. And remeber: parish workloads and personnel change as time goes by; if at first you don't succeed, try again at another time of year(not Advent or Lent), or when there's a new pastor/staff member. Good luck, P. J. Manning, M.L.S. Have the Ohio death certificate for this Thomas Murphy, son of Matthew & Margaret Quinlan Murphy. It lists Thomas as "single" but I realize this could be in error. Death on Oct 9, 1913. Usual residence in Lorain, Ohio. Died in St. John's Hospital; burial at Calvary Cemetery. No spouses known for siblings William and Mary. Can you confirm wife as Helen Doyle with a daughter named Catherine for my records? Any more Doyle details? Also found a Thomas Murphy, born Dec. 1827 and died 4/24/1912 in Rockport, who married an Eleanor Doyle, born 10/26/1833 and died 12/4/1913 in Cleveland. Eleanor's parents were John Doyle and Mary Hartrick, both born Ireland. This Thomas and Eleanor had nine known children. More details if needed. Hi List..... I finally pulled out that picture I thought I had of the Doyle's in Sharon PA. My aunt had sent me a lot of old pictures and what I did was take pictures of all of them so I could send them back to her. Everything that was written on the backs I wrote on the backs of my copies. The particular picture I was thinking about I found and it was of seven women and one man and it was dated 1912 and said the Doyle's and Milot's in Sharon PA. It also had written on it Gram Corrigan and Mary Doyle. Doyle reseachers....do you have any connection to Sharon PA or the name MILOT? I don't know if MILOT is a relation, just friends, or neighbors. Colleen MT
I followed up with the Diocese office back in June with the answer sent back "they have been involved in several community projects." Well that's good, but still no information and what's even worse, is they put that check into the bank and no one even bothered with a thank you! You also can't go to the church and look through the records yourself. I tried. Then asked the Diocese office if they would consider having the records filmed. They looked at me in horror! Sigh. Carol in Georgia, Sorry to hear you received nothing for your $20. when sending a request for information to St. Augustine's. Try sending your request again (minus the $20). Perhaps it was simply lost in the shuffle. Occasionally I attend the 10:00 Mass at St.Augustine's. Neat place. They have developed a wonderful ministry to the deaf community. The church is in serious need of repair. They seem to be operating on a very tight budget and may not have many (any!) people on staff who could look up records. Which does not excuse there lack of reply. Also, I seem to remember a fire in their history. Possibly, there are few records. I would be willing to make a phone call for you, if you think that might help. Maureen
Colleen & other Doyle researchers, I have Helen DOYLE married to Thomas MURPHY ca 1872. Thomas b Ireland 1851; son of Matthew & Margaret QUINLAN MURPHY. Helen & Thomas had daugh Catherine baptized at St Patrick's Bridge Ave. Have no other info. Might someone know of Helen DOYLE b ca 1851? Carolyn
Carole, Thanks for letting me know. I have not tried to contact them yet, so perhaps it's better to try to get information from the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. Although I haven't tried that either. Jani
I hope you have had better luck contacting St. Augustines then I did. I sent a $20 check and request. They cashed my check immediately and I am still waiting for the information. That was back in February. Bob Doyle was my uncle. My father and I, both worked at the track in 1962. Dan Corrigan was probably the Corrigan who came to my father's memorial service. Thank you. Ed Doyle
Hi Joan and Colleen I asked my brother about my father's best friend Danny Corrigan and Bob Doyle. Here it is right from his 60 year old memory. Bob Doyle was the head of THE OHIO RACING GUILD aka union. ( Thistle Downs Race Track} He also worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer . My father Bob Ward and Danny Corrigian were 2 of the orginial charter member of the guild. They all worked down on West 25th Street there was a market there and they meat booths and would book out of the meat counters. The Corrigans and the Doyles were from that area, as were our relatives the MICHEL family. Danny would have started at the race track around 1945. He and his wife Grace lived on Esther Ave from 1947 to the 1980s. Danny died late 60's or early 70's his wife Grace died in or about 1980 My brothers sugest you contact the Plain Dealer. He also said Pat Lynch still works at the track and a call to him would confirm a lot of things. He was a close friend. I hope this helps someone, helped me gave me some info I did not know about my Father:) Happy Hunting! Susan PI (Ward) BEDFORD, BEUCUS, CASPERSON, CHRISTENSEN, HOCH, MAJOR, MORRIS, MICHEL, RETTBERG, WARD
It seems the name I put in bold letters, didn't bold on the message. The name I think may be my gr grandfather is the James P. mentioned in the second paragraph of the query. Colleen
Hi List I was going thru the info my aunt sent be a while back ago and she said that her gr grandmother (James Corrigan's mother) married twice; one of her names was McCafferty. Then I was checking out the queries on http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?ohio,corrigan::corrigan::77.html and found this query. I tried to get a hold of the guy but it came back undeliverable. This is the query: Posted by John J. Corrigan III dated 21 Jun 98: "I'm trying to find out more about my family tree. Can you help? This is what I know: My great great grandfather was Thomas Corrigan and he married Catherine McTighe. They were from Saula Achill Sound in County Mayo, Ireland. Their children were Andrew, James Thomas (1856-1919), Catherine, ???. My great grandfather was James Thomas Corrigan who married Anna McCafferky (McCafferty). They arrived in the United States 5-23-1888 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Their children were John Joseph, Thomas J., Mary, Andrew J., James P., Loretta, and Hugh Leo. My grandfather, John Joseph, married Mary Elizabeth Willison 11-26-1914. Their children were Mary Margaret, John Joseph, Loretta Francis, Robert Willison, Eileen Virginia, and Rose Kathlyn. They came from Cleveland, Ohio to California around the late 1930's or early 1940's. John Joseph owned a bar in Los Angeles called "J.J.'s". If anyone can help me link my family line with other Corrigans in the U.S. and in Ireland please let me know." Well that was the query. The name I bolded could be my gr grandfather. Does any of this sound familiar......or does anyone know who this John J. Corrigan III is who posted this query. Thanks Colleen/Montana
