    1. Kanes, Corrigans & Doyles
    2. Tim Kane
    3. Colleen -- I've never come across a Margaret Kane or any Corrigans or Doyles in my researches, but there are some sizable gaps, especially in the Cleveland line of the family. The only known female Kanes/O'Kanes there (circa 1900-1922) are my great grandmother, Mary (b. No. Ireland, ca. 1832), and her daughter Hannah (nee: Kane) McGregor (b. 1868, Gateshead, England; husband: James). Don't know if Jimmy and Hannah had any children, or anything about Jimmy's side of their family. Will keep you in mind if I stumble across any likely candidates. Good luck. 3. Tim.....Do you have any Corrigan's or Doyle's in your family. I remembered my aunt sending me some notes she jotted down about what she could remember about the family and one of the names was Margaret Kane, possibly of Rocky River....a cousin of Catherine Corrigan Halligan. Margaret Kane could be from the Corrigan side or the Doyle side since Catherine's parents were James Corrigan and Bridget Doyle. Any idea what records are still held there and for what time periods? Is the parish helpful? The services for my great-grandfather, Bernard Kane/O'Kane, are believed to have been held there after his death, believed to be 28 May 1913. His wife Mary (nee: McKay/Kie/Cay) Kane/O'Kane, also died in Cleveland on 22 Mar 1921. It is possible that her memorial was also held here. Any help will be appreciated. Tim Kane

    1. Cleveland Irish - Collins / Casey
    2. EDWARD COLLINS
    3. Hi, I am looking for information on my Irish ancestors from Cuyahoga / Lorain County Ohio. I am looking for any information on James and Bridget (CASEY) COLLINS who moved to Cleveland sometime after the Civil War. According to oral family tradition and some records the lived in Wheeling, (Virginia) West Virginia prior to and during the Civil War. They are listed in the 1870 and 1880 Census records as living in Cleveland in 8th Ward (1870). Cleveland Directories list them as living on Rose Alley and later Dare Ave. According to available information James COLLINS was born in ?, Ireland in 1824(?). The names and location of his parents are unknown. The date of death is unverified but some records indicate it may be 2 May 1889 [death index for Cuyahoga Co., I have not verified this at the county archive yet]. Burial is location is unknown, but believed to be Calvary in Cleveland. The date and location of the marriage of Bridget CASEY and James COLLINS is unknown at this time. Bridget CASEY was born in (?), Ireland in 1833(?). [ There are three conflicting documents with the age of Bridget. Death certificate lists date of birth as 1843. This is not probable since she would be 11 years old at the time of the birth of her first son. The 1870 Census lists her age as 32 {birth year 1838} and the 1880 Census lists her age as 47 {birth year 1833}.] Bridget died in Cleveland on 8 Jul 1911 and was buried in Calvary. Funeral was at St. Patricks Church. Her parents listed on the death certificate were John CASEY and Margaret JORDAN of ?, Ireland. Her address at the time of death was listed as W. 28th and Bridge Ave. According to census records James and Bridget had at least 6 children. They are as follows: Thomas b 1854 Wheeling(?), Virginia d. ? James b 1857 Wheeling(?), Virginia d. ? Edward H. b 1 Mar1858 Wheeling,VA(WV)d. 26Jan1912 Cleveland, OH Alice b 1861 Wheeling, VA (WV) d. ? John b 1863 Wheeling, WV d. ? Anna b 1869 Cleveland, OH d. ? The marriage forAlice is as of yet undetermined. Anna signed the death certificate for her mother as Informant in 1911 as Anna A. Andrews. Her address was listed as 17 West Virginia (possible hotel or apartment complex). Edward H. COLLINS is my great grandfather. I am looking for any information that anyone has on Bridget and James COLLINS and their children. I will be visiting the West Virginia State archives in Charleston sometime in early September. If any new information is found I am willing to share it with any of James and Bridget's descendants. Edward Collins [email protected] bt

    3. Carole and others: In following your problems with getting information from St. Augustine's, etc., may I offer these suggestions. First, most local parishes are extremely understaffed as noted so you may have better luck with the Diocese office on Superior Ave. (address not handy at the moment) Second, try to include a short Family Group Sheet for the core family with your request. This allows several methods of cross reference for the researcher. Third, keep your "requests" to a minimum per letter. Better to send additional letters if needed. Include a $20 donation to cover initial research time. For example, if you're seeking an Irish town or location, try sending a FGS for the person's parents, showing all siblings and their spouses with Cleveland marriage dates and parishes (if known). Likely, one or more of immigrant's marriage records will list their baptismal parish and/or Irish origins. As it may take some time to search all the records, be sure request only the "Irish origins" from the basic research. This sets a short term and hopefully obtainable goal while the subsequent research will likely provide you with much new data. Someone list the Cleveland Catholic Diocese address for Carole please. 3. Margaret, I certainly agree with what you are saying here. You are so correct. However, the attitude from these folks at the church level is not one that is "friendly". It is like don't bother me, I have records to take care of/work to do/get out of here. I do not understand why the Diocese would not let the records be filmed. It certainly would save them a lot of headaches. I asked once when I was in the Diocese office and LDS has approached them several times and was refused. I think it is because of the sealing LDS does, etc. However, if a special contract/arrangement was made not to do those things with these records, perhaps something could be worked out? I don't suppose the local historical centers or genealogy societies have any influence here and feel sure they have already tried to remedy the situation. 3. On my soapbox again :-) I think these are all good suggestions, but it's a shame that we have to have ways to tiptoe around parish administrators, etc. After all, who paid for these records in the first place, and who continues to pay for the buildings they're housed in, the salaries of the people who administer them, and on and on. If a parish runs a building campaign or other money-raising effort, I'm sure they don't expect that we will all "get around" to donating when we have time, maybe in a year or so. And then there is that commandment to "Honor Thy Father," which, in our way, we're all trying to do.
