    3. looking for information on James A Smith born in 1846 in Ireland and died 21 Sep 1890 in Cleveland. on 27 May 1872 he married Margaret Cunningham. She was born in Ireland on 17 May 1851 and died in Columbus (franklin Co) on 10 April 1936 Both are buried in Cleveland (James A at St Joseph's Cemetary... Margaret Cunningham may be at the same location) they apparently had 9 children... one of which was Rose C. Smith (my grandmother) who married Clarence E. Harding of Akron and later moved to Columbus (and her mother came to live with her when she was widowed, raised her children while she went to work) all that said... I think that James A and Margaret Cunningham each migrated from Ireland via Canada to get to Cleveland ...but heaven knows I can't prove anything... really would appreciate any information you all might be able to give me about these two -- and/or sources I could go to to find more... Thanks in Advance Bunnie Smith

    3. Hi Kelly, Thank you very much for your efforts. The Weed entries can definitely be eliminated. I have no James J. Egan in my records. I have a Michael James Egan but I have his movements well tracked until he died. He only lived in Massachusetts and California. I have two Alice Egans in my Co. Sligo, Ireland database so I may check out the Alice M. Egan you found. I should definitely check out the Sophia Miller. Miller is a quite common name, but Sophia isn't. It may be just a coincidence but the Marriage Certificate will determine if that is the case. I know the Vital Record Index is not always inclusive. Previously, I have found relations in the records that did not appear in the Index. It is possible that Sophia Miller was included in the Index and Joseph Henry was not. Thank you again for your help. It is greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Joe Thomas Whitelock wrote: > > Dear Joseph: > > Well, I really wish that I had good news for you! 3. Dear Joseph: Well, I really wish that I had good news for you! I don't have the best news but I do have something. I searched the Marriage Index for Cuyahoga Counties Marriage Index for 1906-1910. I found a Sophia Miller Vol. 70 Pg. 287 Alice M Egan Vol. 71 Pg. 264 Leo R. Weed Vol. 71 Pg. 128 Helen Pauline Weed Vol. 71 Pg. 445 James J. Egan Vol. 74 Pg. 8 Florence Weede Vol. 75 Pg. 171 I looked for any Egan's, Weeds, and Sophia Miller's. This was all that I came up with. Teh 2 Egan's, I thought were a good possibility but the Sophia Miller, I don't know. In that Vol. I didn't find any Egans!?!? I really wished that I found more for you. Please let me know if you have any other ideas. Maybe I'll find something else!? Please take care and God bless. Let me know if there's anything that I can do to help! Kelly -----Original Message----- From: Joseph R. 3. Hi Brenda, I assume you found the message I posted on the Cleveland Irish website. I have not been able to trace the families mentioned except for Edward H. Collins. The other brothers and sisters are still missing. I live in the Dayton, Ohio area and have not made a trip to Cleveland yet. I am primarily working off records in Columbus at the Ohio Historical Society. They have the Ohio death certificate index from 1912 through 1938 on-line. If you live in Ohio they can loan microfilm to must public libraries in the state for a modest fee. Check their online catalog. The only death that I know of at that time would be my grandmother in 1943. There were only two children in the family, my father and my aunt. The great grand father and his wife and children are all researched and documented within the family. The great great grandfather was James Collins and his wife was Bridget (possibly a second wife). They moved to Cleveland in 1866 or 67 from West Virginia according to data that we have found. There were 4 boys and 2 girls in the family and I have only found documentation on the third son, Edward who was my gggrand father. Hope this helps. If you find information leading back to other members in the Collins family I would appreciate hearing from you again. I will send a copy of the original posting just incase you haven't seen it. 3. Hello all. I must second what Carole has said. Although the LDS has parish records for all of SCotland, I am now going through, frame by frame, the marriage records. They are much more detailed, since they provide the occupation of the groom and the bride's husband; also their place of residence, which is not always in the area where they were married. It allows enough detail to sometimes verify that it is or is not your person. Another example-- I went through the parish registers for a (thankfully) small British village. One TANNER family in the whole place. But there was a gap of 20 years before the name reappeared, with no marriages of the first set and the one son had died. The 2nd TANNER set, post gap, had a son born elsehwere. When I looked at THAT film, I found his mother was the unwed daughter of the TANNERS in Tadley!! If I had not done that tedious work, I would never have been able to make the connection. Take the time, & do it yourself--- many IGI entries are dates/locations with @-- this means the researcher could not find evidence to prove it and made an assumption. The IGI might get you going in the right direction, but it is only as good as the researcher for that particluar entry. Many of us online folks can offer help, advice, contacts, and the occasional lookup. Rootsweb volunteers are putting copies of original materials online-- plus transcriptions. But again, with a transcription, be careful. SOmeone may have made a typo. Another TANNER example-- I had burial dates from the parish record (original on film) for the son who died. I then borrowed the cemetery inscription records. There I found a transcription with a male TANNER I was unaware of, buried adjacent to the family patriarch. When I looked through my material again, I realized that this was the son who died young, but one number had been transposed. So research, and have fun! If nothing else, it teaches you patience and perseverance! Judith in OH

    3. You cannot do everything on line! How do you know that information on line is correct? There is nothing that will replace searching the original records. You can order film from LDS and search the original records that have been microfilmed. You can make copies of documents from those records. I have copies of everything pertaining to the lines I am searching. Then a year or two down the road, have gone back to those documents because I came across new information and all of a sudden, that copied document turned out to be a key piece of evidence. Having copies of documents is very important. One example of online info through IGI at the LDS website is the name of a person Hans Stephan Imel and wife Ursula - which is not correct. I have copies of the documents for their marriage and children's births (these are German records which list parents names on birth records) and the father's name on the records is clearly Johann Sterban, so it boils down to an interpretation. Johann had 10 children and some of the records do not have his name very clearly, but there are 3 of them that do. A friend of mine who was born in Germany did these translations for me, as I am not real good with the handwriting, but getting better! Not all records are on line. I have many records copied from film that are only on microfilm. So if you rely on just online records, I am afraid you are going to have big gaps in your information and you won't connect to the right family, if you connect at all. Not trying to step on anyone's toes here, but original document search is very important if you want to feel confident about your lines and that you have the right family.
