    3. Carolyn. If you have time could you check your 1895 Cleveland for Murphy, Michael (blacksmith) and Reddy, John. They are both my great grandfathers. Both are in the 1890 census but not 1900. I have several researched several death certificates but the dates do not coincide. It would help me immensely to pinpoint the correct ones if I knew if they were still alive in 1895. 3. Hi, Looking for information about my maternal grandfather Patrick F. Gibbons of Cleveland, Ohio, born 1874 and died in 1920 I believe. Son of John and Mary Gibbons, brother of Mary Gibbons Berry (b. 1863) and Hannah Gibbons (b. 1870) (elementary school in Cleveland still named after Hannah). Patrick married Anna Sheehy in 1901 at St. Malachi's church in Cleveland. According to the 1880 Census, John & Mary owned a boarding house at what looks like 60 (?) West River St. in the Flats in Cleveland. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Cliff Fortune

Can you narrow down area? There are 23 Steigers on both east & west side. I obtained my 1895 & 1914 directories a few years ago when Fairview Park Library was transferring all of them to microfilm. I happened to be at the library at the right moment. Carolyn

    1. ADAMS and LONNEY families
    2. Connie B. Hunter
    3. I am looking for information about GEORGE RICHARDSON ADAMS and his wife, CATHERINE LONNEY. George had emigrated from Ireland to Cuyahoga Falls, Summit Co., in 1860. He married Catherine Lonney, born in Ireland and daughter of THOMAS(?) LONNEY, about 1870. In 1880 they lived in Twinsburg, Summit Co., but moved to Cleveland and both lived on Crane Ave. at the time of their deaths in 1909 and 1914. Was this a particularly Irish area of town? Their son HERBERT WILLIAM ADAMS married IDA MAE PARK, whose grandfather JACOB PARK had been born abt. 1814 in Butler Co., Pa. of Irish parents. I have had no luck in finding his parents or where in Ireland they were from. I have traced George Richardson Adams back to Ireland, County Leitrim, Kiltoghert parish. His father Richardson Adams was listed as a tenant on land of a Rev. Percy. All the census entries I have for the family indicate Richard, his wife Mary, and George and Catherine were born in Ireland. However, George and Catherine's death certificates say they were born in England? Anyone familiar enough with history to know why (or if it's even plausible) that an English family would move to Ireland as tenant farmers in the aftermath of the famine? Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Connie in Idaho

    2. Kelly, This is the story about how we came to be the owners of this "stuff." Sometime in the late '70's when my husband was just out of high school, he worked for a summer at a place called Rex Pipe in Medina, OH. Medina was still a pretty rural area at the time. Behind Rex Pipe there was mostly field and farmland. The only thing back there were some abandoned, old farm houses. My husband walked back there on his lunch hour one day to check out these buildings. They had been empty for quite some time. He said raccoons were living in the house and you could tell people had taken anything of value long before. All that was left was some clothes on the closet floor and old letters and photos scattered across the floor. As he picked up some of these letters to read he decided to take them and read them at home. Since then, we have been married and moved three times. The McGaffney stuff has gone with us each time. The old bread box full of cards, letters and photos is in our basement as we have adopted Florence as our surrogate grandmother. It seems a shame that she painstakingly saved these letters all those years and there was no family to claim them. Anyway, after digging a couple letters out, I realized that they are addressed to Florence and Stephen McGaffney. Stephen and Florence originally lived in Cleveland but moved to Medina to go into the cattle farming business. They has one son Larry, who moved to Florida. Stephen died before Florence. Do you have any older relatives you could ask about this perhaps? Many of the letters are from the 1950s. Do any of these names sound familiar? Larry, Anne, Donna, Sally, Edna, William, Dory, Martha? I know there is a Marriage certificate from the 1800s in there but can't recall the names on it. Let me know if any of this rings a bell. Lilly Murphy

    3. Dear Lilly: Wow! That's really interesting. My Great Grandfather is Patrick Gaffney. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1901 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. I don't know of any others from our family that live here in Florida but it may have been one of our local relatives that moved here that I don't know about. Patrick's father was John Gaffney and his mother was Winifred Lenahan, they were from the county Roscommon in Ireland-Carrick-on-Shannon. Do you know what is in the box and what names might be attached to the information. I'm very curious!!! Thanks for the info. I look forward to hearing from you! I have lots of McKenna documents, but do not know of > your > Peter. > Lilly Murphy > Lily..... Thank you for contacting me. My Peter Lynch was married to Bridget McKenna. That is basically all I know about the McKennas. But I knew that Bridget and Peter were in Haverstraw, NY and that James Peter Lynch was born there. James Peter was born August 5, 1858 in Haverstraw. Then after 1860 I couldn't find them in Rockland County, NY (Haverstraw). I knew that James Peter Lynch's brother, John Lynch, worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, so I thought maybe they went to Cleveland after NY and that is why John ended up living there. So, when I went to the city directory and then to the census for 1880, I found them in Cleveland at 45 Mulberry Street. Then looking in the city director for Cleveland, I find that there are McKennas at the same address and area. Then I realized, ah.... Bridget McKenna Lynch must be related to these McKennas and that is why they traveled there. Peter Lynch disappeared from the census though, and I find him in the city directory and then not in the city directory around 1863 - 1865. Wondering if he was in the civil war or died some other way about that time. Any information you may have would be truly wonderful.
