Hello All. If your family member died in Cuyahoga Co. prior to 1908, the death record will be held at the Cuy Co. Archives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohcuyaho/archives.htm You can phone or email them with your request. They are helpful, although it may take a while to hear from them. Early death records have no indication of cause of death, basically tell where the person was buried. As "late" as 1905, you may be in luck. Some years after 1900, names of parents & country of origin was included, as well as cause of death, address. It was not done every years between 1900-1908, however. And it will list country only, not town or county, so don't get your hopes up. The Archives also hold early will records, so ask about that at the same time. Wills are atreasure trove of family info, but not too many people made them in the early days. The Catholic Church, Cleveland diocese, will hold burial records, but getting an answer from them requires divine intervention. They are not helpful at all. The best you can hope for from a parish death record anyway is place of burial, & their address. The Catholic Church has NOT permitted the LDS to film any of their records worldwide. The LDS uses the genealogical information they find the posthumously baptised relatives into the Mormon Church,. so you can see why the CC is not anxious to cooperate! Later records might have cause of death, but early records will not. If you know the cemetery where they were interred, you could check with them. Sometimes the cemetery records include who paid for the funeral, or some other instruction. Ask if it is a family plot, & if so, who else is buried there. I found a "Stranger" in one of mine & am still trying to figure out her relationship to my family! Catholic Cemeteries Ass., 10000 Miles Ave. PO Box605310 Cleveland 44105 If you can find out where buried, and who the funeral home was, FYI, McGorray Bros., who buried a lot of Cleveland Irish, donated early records to the Western reserve Hist. Society in Cleveland. You could contact them to follow up for you. http://www.wrhs.org/sites/library.htm Good Hunting! Judith in OH
St. Malachi records: I wondered if there are any death records listed in the files you mentioned at St. Malachi. The death records for 1905 are not available through the Ohio Historical Society and I could not find an obitutuary on her either. I have been looking for more information on the death of my grandmother, Mary Murphy Reddy who died Oct. 19, 1905. I am particularly interested in cause of death and county of Ireland where she was born. I have one source that said her father's name was Michael Murphy and another Patrick Murphy. Shelly I live in Nashville, TN. If I find a center close by, do you know if they could order microfilms pertaining to St. Malachi's or any others relating to the Cleveland area? Sorry, I forget some people are not familiar with this! The Church of the Latter Day Saints has microfilmed areas around the world (if they are permitted to!). I ordered the St Malachi fiche thru the library at a local branch- it has to stay at the church library, but is there if I want to go use it. There is a website to see what films are available: <A HREF="www.familysearch.org">www.familysearch.org</A> Good Luck! Ellen, that would be the FAMILY HISTORY CENTER of the Latter Day Saints (mormons). Check your phone book for the closest in your area. They have a site on-line, but my computer crashed and I am just back up and running. Do a search for the history centers.

Shelly, Could you please look up Kirk, Ballantyne & Schauer. Please. If I can help you any way please ask. Marlene N. Royalton
There is a FHC fische for St Malachi- I believe marriage records. I do not know when I will get over to the FHC in the near future, but am happy to look up any surnames on the list. I found a few McGoverns late 1800's, but do not know if they are related to my Martin McGovern group or not.......... Shelly
Linda~ The records would be at the Diocese Archives. They are listed in the book but Chris Krocel will ask you to put it in writing to her. That address is Archives, Diocese of Cleveland, 1027 Superior Ave. Cleveland Ohio 44114. The Archives have the marriage and baptismal records for all the early parishes in the diocese. Expect a long wait and maybe a call or two to nag with a follow up letter. I do not know how much staff they have or if Chris is the only one. The cost is $10 per hour and $5. for certificate copy. She will send you the info if they have it and the bill. When we were getting our data together for Irish citizenship, we made an appointment at St. Patrick's Bridge Ave. and went directly to the parish house for baptismal and marriage records we needed. However, when we tried that for St. Malachi's both on phone and a personal visit were told all records were through the Archives at the Diocese office. Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood Ohio
Hi, I have noticed over time many references to St. Malachis(sp) . I never paid too much attention to it ,but have recently been told that my Grandmother, Ethel Marie Walsh Calvey and her family were members. I have been having a time finding information about her. Her parents were John F. Walsh and Mary Ann (Molly) Kelly or Kelley. I'm told that they lived on a street off of Detroit Ave. I can't locate a birth certificate for her mostly because I can't ascertain her age! I have a marriage license registration which states that she was born in 1892, a social security application stating a 1895 birth date and records of a divorce which puts here birth date as 1895!!! When she died no-one knew for sure how old she was!!!!! How do I find out if St. Malachi's would have any information on her like a baptism record. Thanks for any information that any-one can give me. Linda McG
My Michael Keyes only had 4 sisters - no brothers. Tom and Jim not family names. Sorry.....Lynne
