I found an Obediah Smith born 1843 (age 37) in Ohio in the 1880 St. Joseph County, Michigan census. Is this the same one you are seeking parents for? This census shows his parents were from PA and I've found a family in Ohio in 1850 with a 10 yr old Obediah and both parents from PA. Let me know if you think this might be the family you are seeking. BTW, the index at Ancestry.com now has an 'every person' index for 1850--it's not just head of household any longer.
