    1. Re: [OH-CENSUS] 1850/MORGAN CO./Charlotte TOWNSEND
    2. Linda, I didn't see a reply for your request. My 1850 index isn't showing any results for Charlotte TOWNSEND anywhere in OH. I found Charlotte 34, Richard 25 and "Monterville" 15 living Jackson Co. IA in the 1860 census. Even though Richard's age is listed as 25 it's possible the census taker wrote his age incorrectly and he's 35. If he and Charlotte were married in 1855, could Montreville have been his son from a previous marriage? She was born about 1823, the daughter of Amos and Mary (SMITH) TOWNSEND. Amos died 1845-1850, but her mother Mary is found on the 1850 Morgan Co. census, with several of her youngest children. They are living next door to her eldest son, Smith Townsend, but I've been unable to find Charlotte. I know she was in Morgan Co., as she married Richard CUMMINGS there in 1855. It's very possible she was married to someone else before Richard, as they had a son, Montreville CUMMINGS, who was born 9 years before they married, in 1846. So far I've been unable to identify her first husband, however. Any help would be most appreciated!!!! 3. Hi Marilyn, Thank you so much for your response to my query. It is entirely possible that Montreville was Richard's child by a previous marriage, as Charlotte's pension application lists an un-named 'stepson'. However, Richard is found on the 1850 census living with his parents in Morgan Co., OH., but Montreville is not there, and he was born in 1846. Perhaps he was living with someone else? But who? I know that it was common for young children to be raised by another family member when a wife died, particularly in childbirth. Maybe his first wife's family?
