I have a question for everyone: Have you ever seen the family you are looking for (all the correct names, ages, birthplaces) but they have the TOTALLY WRONG surname? I have been searching for my 3-gr.grandparents family in the 1850 Census (Hancock County, Eagle Township). I think I have located them (at least I THINK I have): ... Image # 412 of 427 at Ancestry.com ... Lines #27 - 33 / Dwelling # 61 / Family # 61 George Wolheter, Jr. - 42 - m - F. - 1,800 - Pa. Lotty or Letty " - 36 - f - O. Mary - 14 - f - O. Sarah - 11 - f - O. John - 6 - m - O. {this would be my 2-gr.grandfather} Hannah - 4 - f - O. Elizabeth - 1 - f - O. The reasons I believe this to be my family: * I cannot locate them anywhere else in Hancock County or Ohio in 1850 but they are there (Eagle Twp.) in 1840 & 1860. * This could have been a "copy" of the actual census page, wherein someone has taken the surname from the Geo. Wolheter, Sr. above (Dwelling # 60 / Family # 60) and given it to my family -- especially if they could not make out the surname (which should be LUCAS; probably not 'Jr'). * Everything else, as I previously stated, points to this possibility. Thanks for any comments, suggestions, etc. :-) Jeannie (Lucas) Fleck
If your family was located there in 1840 & 1860, did you check to see who the nearby neighbors were, and compare that info to the family & neighbors from the 1850 census ? Something to consider anyway, as well as looking for land, tax, directory sources and an actual birth record on the youngest child (Elizabeth) since the age was listed as 1 year old I wouldn't assume this is a mistake and that this is actually the family your seeking without checking out other source records. I've seen some huge mispellings in surnames from census records but nothing close to what you mention. At least not yet :o) Good Luck, J ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeannie" <westfieldfleck-jhf@comcast.net> To: <OH-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 27, 2004 5:24 PM Subject: Copies of Census ??? > I have a question for everyone: > > Have you ever seen the family you are looking for > (all the correct names, ages, birthplaces) but they > have the TOTALLY WRONG surname? > I have been searching for my 3-gr.grandparents family > in the 1850 Census (Hancock County, Eagle Township). > I think I have located them (at least I THINK I have): > ...
