If your family was located there in 1840 & 1860, did you check to see who the nearby neighbors were, and compare that info to the family & neighbors from the 1850 census ? Something to consider anyway, as well as looking for land, tax, directory sources and an actual birth record on the youngest child (Elizabeth) since the age was listed as 1 year old I wouldn't assume this is a mistake and that this is actually the family your seeking without checking out other source records. I've seen some huge mispellings in surnames from census records but nothing close to what you mention. At least not yet :o) Good Luck, J ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeannie" <westfieldfleck-jhf@comcast.net> To: <OH-CENSUS-LOOKUP-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 27, 2004 5:24 PM Subject: Copies of Census ??? > I have a question for everyone: > > Have you ever seen the family you are looking for > (all the correct names, ages, birthplaces) but they > have the TOTALLY WRONG surname? > I have been searching for my 3-gr.grandparents family > in the 1850 Census (Hancock County, Eagle Township). > I think I have located them (at least I THINK I have): > ... Hello Everyone, I have two updates about census indexes which you might be interested in. The 1850 index is now an all-name index, so if you've been looking for a lost child and didn't know the parent's name, you might want to submit a new request. In addition, the 1910 census has now been indexed for ALL states by HOH ( head of household) at ancestry.com so if that year has been a brick wall for you in other states, you can now post a request to the state census lookup list of your choice and hopefully you will find your lost person. One last reminder, the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1930 indexes are also all-name indexes. Happy Hunting Eveyone! Marilyn in Ohio - List Mom
Jeanne Yes I have seen the census page and the person is George Woolheater Jr. He was living next door to his parents George Woolheater SR. Some of the family is buried in the Tawa/Flick Cemetery. Thanks, Carol, for the input. I think it could be a W. as his middle initial -- by 1860 he has a son named George W. LUCAS. So, if the original was a bit smudged or scribbly, the "copy"-writer would just guess as best he/she could ... I think they were supposed to have a copy made for local records, or something? I do census lookups on several states and have never heard that several copies were made. My opinion is that I'm looking at the original handwritten copies. You can tell by the various handwriting style of the day. A double s was written as a p and I see that in the early to mid 1800's. Just my opinion. Have you looked to see if the Wolheters appear in later census. I have a question for everyone: Have you ever seen the family you are looking for (all the correct names, ages, birthplaces) but they have the TOTALLY WRONG surname? I have been searching for my 3-gr.grandparents family in the 1850 Census (Hancock County, Eagle Township). I think I have located them (at least I THINK I have): ... Image # 412 of 427 at Ancestry.com ... Lines #27 - 33 / Dwelling # 61 / Family # 61 George Wolheter, Jr. - 42 - m - F. - 1,800 - Pa. Lotty or Letty " - 36 - f - O. Mary - 14 - f - O. Sarah - 11 - f - O. John - 6 - m - O. {this would be my 2-gr.grandfather} Hannah - 4 - f - O. Elizabeth - 1 - f - O. The reasons I believe this to be my family: * I cannot locate them anywhere else in Hancock County or Ohio in 1850 but they are there (Eagle Twp.) in 1840 & 1860. * This could have been a "copy" of the actual census page, wherein someone has taken the surname from the Geo. Wolheter, Sr. above (Dwelling # 60 / Family # 60) and given it to my family -- especially if they could not make out the surname (which should be LUCAS; probably not 'Jr'). * Everything else, as I previously stated, points to this possibility. Thanks for any comments, suggestions, etc. :-) Jeannie (Lucas) Fleck
