Hi Dorene, I'm not Rose and I may be jumping in without complete info, so please pardon me! I've found a William Shimp, 68, widower, living with daughter and son-in-law and family in Licking Co., OH. Could this be your William? Name: Wm Shump (note transcription of surname) Age in 1910: 68 Estimated Birth Year: 1841 Birthplace: Ohio Home in 1910: HARRISON TWP, LICKING, Ohio Race: White Gender: Male Series: T624 Roll: 1203 Part: 2 Page: 73A Year: 1910 Shimp, Wm, F-in-law, M W 68 Wd OH OH OH Living with Lester and Clara Fritz, children Cecil, Luella, Harrold, Clarence all born OH, and all parents born OH in Harrison Twp., Licking Co., OH on 15 April 1910. I don't find a Rachel Shimp anywhere in Ohio but the index I'm using is head of household only (with the exception of any others with a different surname in a household--that's how Wm popped from the Fritz household). Let me know if you'd like a copy of the image. Regards, Terri McDonald Hauk t.hauk@comcast.net

    1. Re: [OH-CENSUS] Re: Monroe Co.-1860-Solomon Johnston
    2. Dear Rose, Thank you so much for all of your good work. I really appreciate it. The problem is: I am researching the ancestors of my great uncle Howard Johnston. He is my grandmother, Mary Johnston's brother. He was born in 1908 in Franklin Twp., Monroe Co., OH. His father was Benjamin Johnston and his mother was Catharine Iola Crook. Benjamin was born in 1862, I believe in Monroe Co. Uncle Howard has told me he didn't know his father's parents names. They were dead before he was born. Evidently they were never mentioned much in the family. However, he says Benjamin had one half-brother named Solomon (sp?) Johnston. Howard knew this half-brother so he was alive in the early 1900s. I don't have his birth date, but I believe they all lived in Monroe Co.,OH. I think that this half-brother was older and I was hoping to find him still living with his parents which would lead me to Benjamin's father. Uncle Howard is 95 and, while still reasonably sharp, is sketchy on details. He is the only one in the family still living who would have any personal details. I believe Benjamin's mother was named Airy Johnston and was born about 1824. However I don't know if she and his father ever married. She was listed as a widow. The father could have been married before and was killed in the Civil War after Benjamin was born. Wives died young in those days. She would have been in her 40's when Benjamin was born, so perhaps she finished raising whatever children there were. I know the information is sketchy. If you could turn up anything else, I would be very grateful. As it is, I am at a very large brick wall. Benjamin died in July of 1943 and possibly his death certificate will lead to something. I need to check that. Sandy

    3. Sandy, there were several Solomon Johnston but World Connect lists one that might fit. He was born May 1842 (prob Bethel Twp, Monroe) married Sarah; they had 8 ch, 7 survived until at least 1910. Death date listed as 12 Jan 1920 burial at Creighton Ridge, Bethel Twp, Monroe Co. That's pretty much all I have Beverlee > Dear Rose, > > Thank you so much for all of your good work. 3. This may or may not be my great-aunt Marie. Marie's parents, Victor and Katie (Will) Dreher, were born in Bavaria, but census takers of that era weren't always attentive to such things and often weren't given correct info. Margaret, my grandmother, was married at the time of the 1930 census to Edward C. Manne who lived with the Drehers at the Waverly Ave. address. I do belong to the Hamilton County list and they have been of some help in narrowing down the Drehers and Mannes. I may check out Longview Hospital to see if there are any record that can be released to me about Marie. Thanks again. Roger D. 3. Hi Dorene, I didn't find a William Shimp in Fairfield Co but did find these two entries-could William have died by then? 1840, OH, Fairfield Co, Greenfield twp, pg 288; Catherine Shimp, head; Males; 1 in age 15 - 20; 2 in age 20 - 30; Females; 1 in age 15 - 20; 1 in age 50 - 60; end of this household. Then there is an entry indexed as Shump but after viewing the page, it appears to be Shimp to me -it has a dot over what I think is an i not a u. 1840, OH, Fairfield Co, Liberty twp, pg 364; Mary Shump (as indexed), head; Males; 1 in age 5 - 10; 2 in age 20 - 30; Females; 1 under 5; 2 in age 10 - 15; 2 in age 20 - 30; 1 in age 30 - 40; and then instead of a 1 it has what appears to be a check mark in the box for age 50 - 60; end of this household. I don't usually send images but if you think this Mary might be yours and since there is some question about the name and the checkmark on the age 50 - 60, I can try to send you the image as an attachment if you would like. There were 4 William Shimp's that came up in the United States index; one in Salem Co, NJ; one in Cumberland Co PA; and 2 in Mifflin Co, PA; If you think those are a possibility, you may want to subscribe to those state lists for a reading on them. Hope there is something here to help. Rose ----- Original Message ---- > Looking for 1840 census data for William Shimp age between 50-60, with female > 40-50 possibly in Liberty Twp.
