I have heard a little different spin on this controversy from an O'Donnell in Tipperary. He told me that many of the Anglo farmers who came to Ireland eventually Gaelicized their names when it became popular or advantageous to do so. He said his family name was originally Daniel and was changed to O'Donnell in the 1800s. So I guess it went both ways. George
