On the info about my ggreatgrandfather- Michael and his son James both were members of the Benevolent Society of the Elks and "other Irish societies". Greetings from the far west *California*, I became aware of this very valuable resource while searching for records of my late great uncle Ignatius Kerr (http://www.wrindex.com/). Luckily this lady responded and told me about this index that her father is feverously working on inputting into this same database. Apparently, Mr. Wren inherited a massive stack of pre-earthquake records in San Francisco from his family, the Wrens, and is putting them into a huge database. It is a curious yet magnificent project and I am certain he would appreciate any ideas on how to manage it better if at all possible as far as computer-expertise goes. I ended up getting this CD after the exciting find of my uncle Ignatius Kerr (The Wrindex: A unique database with 320,000 listings of individuals participating in Irish Societies in San Francisco from 1849 - 1906). You may now be saying to yourself - societies? It seems that during this time period, being a member of various societies was the standard for many of the Irish in San Francisco (semi-elite perhaps - ?). I found a record of my cousin being an honor role student when SHE was 11 years old (1904). It seems it made the school newspaper or something and Mr. Wren has these old records and even women are to be found in the indexes which is again, most surprising (found my long lost aunt!). There are over 1,200 entries for the O'Donnells that were in San Francisco during this time (1849-1906). It tells you which Irish Societies they were in and what they were doing at the time with a specific date with some extra details in many cases. Some of the events they reference include things like "Relief Fund for Tipperary", etc. Apparently many persons using this index have been able to pinpoint the exact location that their Irish ancestors came to the USA from during this time period. I found my own great grandfather, great granduncle(s), long lost great grandaunt(s) and many cousins in this index. I will do lookups for anyone on the O'Donnell-L list that is looking for an O'Donnell relative that they think may have been in San Francisco during this time. Luckily, this index is not limited to just men because many of the women volunteered at churches, etc. and write-ups about their efforts were in fact recorded (YIPPEE!!). This process could be of great help to both you and I alike. Should you have a request please let me know and I'll try to get to it as soon as I can. jbbrousssard has given me hope. I am trying to trace 5 O'Donnell sisters who sang & played harps entertainig in Ireland & San Francisco. Could have been in SF in 1870's. My grgrandmother married James McBrearty in 1879 in Alameda County. I hope to go to Ireland next year and would like to know where to go. What I have found so far only says Ireland no counties or anything. If anyone has a hint, I would appreciate it. Janice

Dear Listers, Thanks so much for everyone's help and input for the last couple of years. All the hints of what to look for paid off. We have recently returned from a 3 week trip to Ireland. We were already there when the attack on the WTC happened. It was really impressive to experience the outpouring of support and condolences from the Irish people - who of course lost many of their own people, too. Awesome to see the American Flag and the Irish flag flying side by side on so many private homes and flying at half-mast on all public buildings. The good news is that in County Derry (Corick, Draperstown) we actually stood on the land that was farmed by my grgrgrandfather, Oliver Bradley and saw the remains of the houses where the families on the 1831 census had lived. In County Donegal we found a 90 year old man who remembered my grgrandmother O'Donnell and the O'Donnell cousins who came to the states in the early 1920s. We actually stood inside the remains of the old O'Donnell homestead in Carrickatimpan, Glendowan. Thanks to some very helpful O'Donnells in the area (who probably are not related) we found my grgrandparents graves in Temple Douglas Cemetery. And was given a contact here in the states for a descendent of my grandmother's brother It was a very successful trip. Of course, there are still many mysterious blank areas but I can't worry about those until I finish transcribing all of my notes. Thanks everyone! Joan
