    1. [Odessa-Ukraine] Odessa address
    2. eric greenfeldt
    3. I think I sent this question to the wrong e-mail address. The ship manifest for the Madonna coming to NY from Constanza, Poumania in November 1922 has an entry for Josif and Esther Viland. The manifest lists an address of the mother, Rosalia Viland as Piragowski Perculoc 8, Odessa. Can someone help locating where this was? I am trying to find anything I can about the Viland family. Thank you. Eric --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com

Author: mj7777 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.eeurope.ukraine.odeska/753.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: If you are tracing the family from Russia - you will find the Archives very helpful. You need a bit of information first. I notice you have several names. This may be time consuming to trace. However, start with what you know of the family name used at the time they were in Russia. If you have any idea at all it will help; addresses and religion play a big part. The Russian Orthodox church does have some records and again if you have some details they are a great source of information. So start with what you believe - Jewish, Orthodox, Catholic, etc. and do use google. Put in the names you believe even if they have been Anglicised as there may be other sites with members searching for your side of the family. If you think they came from Odessa go into the site on Ancestry for Odessa, or Belarus, etc. put a thread on each and see what happens; suggest one name for each thread or you could be getting several replies and the cope could be large. Good luck. I am delighted that after some years I have found help on this site to find both sides of my father's family. mj7777 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. As research develops we find things are not always as they seem. My family moved to Moscow from Odessa and I am having success tracing them. The term varies from a part of Moscow for different races living in the city to those who are terned 'old believers'. Have a look - it is interesting reading and will help to understand the term. You will find you can relate it to your families' situation. Hope this helps. mj7777 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I still have your Katherine on my "orphan" Hopfinger list. The Hopfingers were from Selz, Kutschurgan and MightHelp was right, the best free source to start is the Odessa3 website. Then The Germans from Russia Historical Society has the most information on the Odessa, Russia area. Your family names are in several of the resources. And the Listserves (email groups) have been very helpful. The Odessa Catholic Archives have not made their information public and it is expensive to obtain the materials and then have them translated from Russian/Old German to English. Hopfingers were orginally from the Haganau, Alsace and those records are online, http://archives.bas-rhin.fr/scripts/accueilanglais.asp . However, you have to manually search through each page as they are not indexed. I have not started to look as I need a whole day to get into the French/Latin/Old German script. Will keep you updated. Stepanov or Stephanoff. His anglicized name was George Joseph Stephens. I have found border crossing information for him and his sister, Melania Chorolsky, her husband, Dimitri Chorolsky and children, Anna and Jim (aka) Eugene. There is a census from Alberta Canada for his brother Nicke (aka Michael or Archie) Stevens as well as his wife and children. They are my uncles family...Their father's name may have been Ivan Stepanov(ff) and mother Eglekeria Emilianova.. Another story has it that the father was Stepan Yuschenko or Urchenko. I found a Giorgi Steffanoff And a Michael Steffanoff who came from Bulgaria, but am unable to confirm that as my family as I found people in the US by that name. Re: White Russian I do not know. This came from My uncle's Daughter who is deceased. I was under the impression that my father who was the youngest son left Russia in a hurry possibly as an army deserter? The family had property that was sold to fund their escape. My aunt came by way of Siberia according to her daughter's family . Perisloka Tava. Sp? I have wondered if they were in favor of the status quo ibut might have run afoul of the Tsar's regime somehow. My uncle's granddaughter overheard a conversation regarding a family member having been shipped off to Siberia and never hear from again? there is also an Ivan Stepanov listed in the Jewish gen site as a victim of the halocaust ??
