In 1922 Michael Collins, Irish general, was killed. Collins had been one of a small group that negotiated a treaty with the English Prime Minister Lloyd George in 1921. Although Ireland was to be self-governed, it was going to be a dominion of the British Empire. De Valera opposed the treaty although the Irish legislature, the Dail Eireann accepted it by a majority vote. The pro-Treaty people were called Free Staters and the anti Treaty people where called Republicans. Collins became the Minister of Finance under the new Irish government. During the early part of 1922 the factions drifted into civil war. Collins and De Valera signed a pact just before the election in June. Collins by then was Commander-in-Chief of the Free State forces. He was killed in an ambush in Cork. Submitted by John Laughland
