This was the high point of the Scottish Jacobite rebellion.(For some reason Nigel Tranter doesn't even mention this battle in his book). In 1911 the Irish Women's Suffrage Federation was formed. In 1981 Michael Devine, Irish political prosoner, died while on a hunger strike in Maze Proson, northern Ireland. O'Connor History, Episode 3. (sorry I missed Episodes 1 through 2) In 1151 Turloch O'Connor , High King of Ireland, invaded Munstre to maintain the submission of the O'Brian crowd. Dermot MacMurrough during all the strife carried off Dervorgilla the beautiful wife of Tiernan O'Ruairc. She may have been to blame. But to make things worse he sent her back home afterwards. Turloch made a settlement between the two men but a serious rivalry remained. These were the thinhgs that weakened Ireland just before the Norman invasion. After 1151 Turloch was able to keep the peace and in 1152 presided over the Synod of Kells. This Synod dealt with Church reform. The Celtic form of the church was quite different from the continental form. Bishops tended to be monks or at least not political types. The King Turloch and the prices gave their approval of the sunstantial reforms which included setting up 36 sees. In 1156 Turloch O'Connor died. The High monarchy went to pieces thereafter. Rory O'Connor succeeded his father in Connacht but lost out to Murcertach MacLochlann for the High Kingship. But MacLochlann was a nasty fellow and eventually committed atrocities which resluted in his own assasination in1166. This opened the High Kingship up for Rory O'Connor again, which he took. He made the Circuit of the Ard Ri'. Tiernan O'Ruairc avenged himself on Dermot MacMurrough who then sought English (Norman) help. Dermot went to England leaving his bastard son Donal Kavanagh to run what was left of Leinster. Rory then settled things again among the other kings and it appeared all was well. But Dermot was in Wales gaining allies. Dark clouds were rising in the east. Submitted by John Laughlin I will be passing these on as I receive them. If you don't want to read them, just delete. I will put what they are in the subject area so you can do easily. Pat Connors, Listowner
