I'd like to add two O'CONNORs to the list: Daniel and Eleanor O'CONNOR who were sponsors at the baptism of Honora DUGGAN , my great greatgrandmother. Baptism took place 24 August 1817, (Catholic) Parish Tipperary. I have no clue about their relationship to Honora DUGGAN's parents, Catherine O'Dwyer and Patrick DUGGAN, who married in 1803. Honora was the seventh of nine children born 1805-1823: John, Catherine, Denis, Mary, Thomas, Patrick, Honora, William, and Michael. Honora married William FITZGERALD, had three daughters, became a widow and emigrated with one daughter. A daughter, Ellen, who remained in Tipperary eventually married Patrick BREEN in Parish Anacarty. They emigrated with their son, Laurence, in 1873-74 to St. Louis, MO where they were reuited with Ellen's mother and sister. Are any of these names lurking in your family tree? I made some errors in my original transmission!! Apologies. My grandfather Martin Connors married Mary O'Neill. It was his mother who was Honoria Benson. . It was the custom in Eire to name the first daughter after the paternal grandmother and the 2nd daughter after the maternal grandmother. I also have been told that we have cousins by the name of Fanning but I have zero information on them. I have a feeling we are all going to be related!! Regards. Teresa
Hi all you O'Connor/Connors from Tipperary people. This list is already close to 30 and growing, it is beyond my imagination already. As you can note, at the bottom of this page is a tagline that has different web pages. I would love to put some O'Connor/Connors/Conner web sites there also. If any of you know any, please post them to the list. I will then ask permission from the owner to post them in our tagline. I am looking for connections for my gggrandfather, Timothy O'Connor/Connors. He was born 1810 ??? Tipperary and married Catherine ??? born 1816. They had a hugh Irish family that included: James, Michael, William, John, Mary, Margaret, Winifred. They all ended up in Troy NY in the 1850-70's. I know a lot of us have the same first names and it certainly makes our research difficult. Hopefully, all of you will start posting and we can see if we can find some connections. Thanks to all of you for subscribing. I look forward to a friendly relationship.
Here goes!! My maternal grandfather was named Martin Connors. He married Honoria Benson - they lived in Borrisoleigh, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. They were of good stock but the Connors people lost everything through gambling and drinking. They ended up in the workhouse - a terrible place to be. Death came early in that place. Martin had a brother, Patrick, who moved to New York and changed his name to Patrick O'Connor. Another brother was called Rody (short for??!!) who stayed in Ireland. Martin and Honoria had 8 children, my Mother Mary Anne who emigrated to England and had me, my sisters Eileen and Anne and my brothers Joseph and Peter. Her siblings were Nora, Bridie, Josie, Margaret (Peg), Phil, Patrick and William. Nora, Bridie and Josie were all recuited at the tender ages of 14 and 15 by the religious orders. Since their IQ's were so high, they all did leave Ireland at the ages of 16 or 17 and emigrated to America. Peg, Paddy and Phil emigrated to England. Bill stayed in Ireland and still lives in our cottage in Borrisoleigh -- my Mother was born there as was I since she left England for a period of time while my Dad was away during World War 11. I hope this is not all too boring for anyone to read. I will try to make it short. My grandfather chose to fight with England during World War 1 and was very nadly wounded. Upon returning to Eire, he was dubbed a traitor for fighting alongside the British - he had to go on the run and changed his name to Martin Ryan. That was for several years -- he was eventually able to return to his home and family and took again his name of Martin Connors. I hear he was a mean man and a drunk (being mean only because he was a drinker). That is all for now. If anyone wants to hear more, I can so do. Thanks. Teresa
Greetings to all and a special thanks to Pat Connors for setting up this site. My relatives came from a place in Tipperary known as Devil's Bit. This is the name of a mountain (a hill by California standards) that has a huge "bite" missing from the top. Legend has it that when the Devil left Ireland he took a bite out of this mountain and spit it out in an area of Tipperary that became known as the Rock of Cashel. My family claims there once was a town there by the name of Devil's Bit but I have not found any evidence of it. Devil's Bit is located about halfway between Thurles and Roscrea. Templemore is the closest town to the mountain. My family believes that James O'Connor was born in Tipperary circa 1750. His son Philip O'Connor was born there circa 1775 and his son, Anthony, was born there circa 1800. Anthony married Anastasia Ryan and had four children: Philip, Mary, Elizabeth, and Bridget. In 1849 they came to the USA but we do not yet know which port they arrived at. We know that as early as 1852 at least part of the family was in St. Paul, Minnesota. Philip was rumored to have come to California in 1852 in search of gold but if he did we believe he got there too late and ultimately reunited with his family in Minnesota. All of the O'Connor girls remained in Minnesota, marrying in to families by the names of Kenkel, Athey, and Westgartte. After the death of his first wife, Ann, in 1860, Philip went to Savannah, Georgia with his mother Anastasia, and Anthony remained in Minnesota with his daughters. Philip fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War and was wounded in the head but luckily survived. After the War, Philip and his mother came out to San Francisco in 1868 where he married Mary Hartnett and they had 12 children: Anastasia, Mary, Elizabeth, Josephine, Edward, Katherine, Theresa, Margaret, Philip, William, Harriet, and Agatha. I am directly descended from Josephine. Most of the family stories place the O'Connors either in Devil's Bit or in the town of Thurles. Anthony was a stonemason and it is not likely that he picked up a skilled trade like that on a farm at Devil's Bit. His son, Philip, was a bricklayer. These occupations suggest that some unknown O'Connor remained behind to work the land at Devil's Bit while the others found jobs in a major town like Thurles. I have no idea what sept of O'Connors we are linked to but my guess would be the sept from Offaly which is a very short distance (about 30 miles) from North Tipperary. In 1849 when my family left, O'Connor was not a common name in Tipperary. By 1890 that was no longer true, but I believe the majority of these O'Connors are linked to the O'Connors from Kerry. I hope this helps and I fondly salute all of the dispersed O'Connors throughout the world. Phil Michelson

This was posted on the Tipperary list by Jane O'Brien from Dublin. She has given me permission to post it on our list. I don't know how much of the following would be available outside Ireland. I only know about here..so if anyone wants to find out...please ask through the newsgroups, thanks Jane Co. Tipperary. Most of the following are only partial. Not true censuses as the 1901 & 1911 are. The first two are not of much use to anyone whose family was not wealthy. Tenants are not listed, only those who had large parcels of land. Mary Connors married John English at Annacarty in 1837. There are a few possible Mary Connors from the baptism registers of both Annacarty and Clonoulty and I have no idea which one might be correct. Sound familiar to anyone? I have a number of Connor(s) references from both parish registers (mainly early 1800s) and would be happy to check for specific names.
