Ok, here goes- I have looked everywhere for info on this subject. You may have already heard the story from other descendants, but as I am new to the list, I will tell it too. My ancestress, Isabel (Pheobe) O'Connor, was born in Ireland c1764. She came to the US c? and married Francis Able in PA in 1785. Now here is the story that has been spread through numerous family branches ever since. "Cousins" I have located through my genealogy research have the identical story being passed in their branches of the family. The story goes that Isabel (sometimes called Pheobe) grew up in a castle with a moat around it-she was a baroness in Ireland. This story has never been proved-BUT in the 1890's Francis and Isabel's grandson in Oregon, James Long Waldrip, was notified that as the oldest living heir of Isabel, he was entitled to the castle. He found that the taxes he would pay on it were more than it was worth, and let it "revert to the Crown." This can be proven-there is a notary record 1798 in Colfax Washington in which james certified that he was indeed Isabel's grandson and could collect the inheritance. I have searched for the castle, the "baroness" concept, etc. with no luck. Doea anyone have any ideas. i am planning a trip to Ireland in the next few years-it would be great to see tha castle.
