    2. I got this update from another list and thought I would post here since this site does have some records relating to the Irish as well as many Connors/O'Connors (list to follow- next email) <A HREF="http://www.ingeneas.com/">inGeneas Canadian Genealogy</A> : : http://www.inGeneas.com : : Below is the article about their records. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You may have wondered how inGeneas decides which records to include in our database. Our primary goal is always to find and transcribe Canadian passenger and immigration records from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. Furthermore, because Canadian passenger manifests were archived beginning with the port of Quebec in 1865 (and these records are available on microfilm at the National Archives of Canada), for the most part we limit the passenger records on our database to those extracted from pre-1865 manifests. Within the parameters detailed in the previous paragraph, there are kinds of records we feel are particularly desirable, such as: records that expand the scope of our database; specific records or types of records in which our patrons have indicated an interest; and, records from our ongoing major project. Below, as examples, I will describe how some of the new records in our database fit into those categories. Records Expanding the Scope of the Database =========================================== It is difficult to find records for pre-Confederation Canada west of Ontario. This is why we are happy to add several lists of settlers and labourers in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company and Lord Selkirk at York Fort and Red River (Manitoba) in 1813. Many of the early settlers in Canada were soldiers who chose to stay here after the regiment in which they served was disbanded. Many others were Loyalists who fled the United States after the American Revolution and settled in Canada. There have been relatively few of either type of record in the database prior to the more than 850 records we are adding in this update. Records in Which Our Patrons Have Expressed an Interest ======================================================= Many of you have told us that records related to Grosse Isle are of interest to you. This month's database updates contains records from several Grosse Isle related documents. * a list, prepared by the Medical Superintendent at Grosse Isle, of those who died while en route to Quebec and a petition to His Excellency the Chief Governor of Upper and Lower Canada signed by many passengers on the same vessel regarding their quarantine there * lists of those who died at the Grosse Isle Hospital in 1833 and 1834 * a list of casualties in "The Sheds" at Grosse Isle in 1834 * a return of the money and effects left by emigrants who died without relatives in 1847 For those of you who are not familiar with Grosse Isle, it was the location of the quarantine station established in 1832 through which all emigrants who travelled to the port of Quebec passed (Quebec was the primary port for immigrants to Canada prior to World War II). For 74,080 immigrants, Grosse Isle became their final resting spot. For additional information about Grosse Ile and the related National Historic Site, visit the website located at http://parcscanada.risq.qc.ca/grosse_ile/. Records from inGeneas's Ongoing Major Project ============================================= It is our intention to include as many records as possible in each database update from our ongoing major project: the transcription of those records from the 1901 Census of Canada that show a year of immigration. This month, we are adding 6,788 records from Ontario County, Ontario plus 2,080 records from the Lambton East (Ontario) Census District and 300 records for Prince Edward County, Ontario. Please let us know if there are any records or types of records that would be helpful in your genealogical research or if you have come across any records that you think would be a valuable addition to our database. I hope that you are able to find something to interest you in the diverse list of new records in this update. And please accept the best wishes of everyone here at inGeneas to you and yours for a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous, fulfilling New Year!
