    1. Steeplechase riding/Irish Ballads and my O'Connor

    3. This request is unusual. However I have tried various sites including Steeplechase home page. Family Lore states that my O'Connor ancestor was a steeplechase rider (and possible horsebreader) who rode in a race where Tommy Corrigan was killed. Apparently there was a Ballad written about it. I can only guess it was in early 1800's and my gr grandmother was still singing it before she died in 1922. My ancestor may be John from Clare. I am not ruling out however that he was a McCausland from Northern Ireland. (see today's query re O'connor - Clare). If you have any "old folks" can you please ask if they remember anything about this in their family history and if you have gone to this trouble can you also ask if the know anything about O'Connors (although may be McCauslands) owning Linen Mills. Also...maybe someone can put me onto a research avenue for the the Linen Mill aspect. At this stage it is one of those family lore things that may have an element of truth in it - although just before WW2 there was talk of making an inheritance claim so they must have thought it feasible. Then the war got in the way. I know there was a lot of activity by the British prior to WW2 to gather unclaimed estates and no doubt all the death duties, so it could have been a McCausland estate and not O'Connor. Anyway worth a try as all other avenues failed and not worth the expense of a "proper" search at this stage when based only on a loose connection.. Many thanks. I hope it is seen as a challeng for this page which has a been a bit quiet of late. regards Iris Wood Western Australia
