Hi all and Michael in particular, Some time ago, Michael O'Connor set me the following task: >I have been following all the messages that Dona so kindly has sent to the >list regarding Kerry baptisms from O'Keife etc. I have noticed the same >problem that Barry is now querying, that is are the "towns" mentioned by >Dona and Barry actual towns or are they just townlands in civil parishes? >Like Barry, I cannot find any towns on my map of Ireland which seems to show >even small villages which, if you blink whilst driving, you miss them! :-) >Barry, I would suggest that you scurry off in haste to your nearest LDS >(Mormon Church) Family History Centre and look up the Griffith's Valuations >for County Kerry (use the index prepared by the National Library in Dublin >which is on microfilm in the LDS FHC) and see if you can identify if any >O'CONNOR/CONNORS/CONNOR is recorded in those places you mention. >Please report back to the list so that we will all know that these are >townlands and not towns/villages. >Hope all on the list have a very happy Christmas and all good health in the >New Year. >Regards >Mike Sadly, a check of Griffith's Valuations proved no help nor did hiring a researcher in Ireland to find them for me. But fate has lent a hand! I received the following e-mail yesterday from a woman whose ancestors come from the very same area: >Thank you for responding! According to the marriage record my >gggrandfather, Michael Connor was of Mouladireen, Templenoe Parish, Barony >of South Duneran(sp Dunkerron), Union and Registra District of Kenmare, >County, Ireland when he married second Mary Foley in 8 November 1876 in the >Roman Catholic Chapel of Kenmare. He had several children which were >recorded as having been born in Mouladireen or Derreendarragh. So I would >surmise that both these townlands were in close proximity. > >According to the Griffith's 1852 Valuation, Derreendarragh is also located >in the Parish of Templenoe. According the Ordinance Survey Map, >Derreendarragh is an area of approximately 225 acres, with a population of >13 in 1852. It is located in the Barony of Dunkerron South, Parish of >Templenoe, Electoral District of Dromore, Union of Kenmare, Ireland. >[Ordanance map #92] If you look at a current map of Ireland, Templenoe is >located on the Kenmare River slightly south of east of the townland of >Kenmare on western coast of County Kerry. Mouladireen does not appear on >any of the current maps which I have access to, however Derreendarragh is >located north of the Blackwater Bridge and NNW of Templenoe. Templenoe is >about 5 km from Templenoe and Templenoe is about 10 km from Kenmare. As >Mouladireen was in the Templenoe Civil Parish, it was most probably in this >Blackwater region. I doubt find this very tiny townland (with a population of 13 people) will be of much general help to those on the list, but it certainly made my day! My thanks to all who generously offered help with this. Best wishes, Barry. ___________________________________/_/_/ Barry E.R, Fraser Family Home page: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9943 Researching: Fraser, Crawford, Lindsay, Shepherd & O'Connor ____________________________________________________________________/_/_/_/
