There is a good possibility that the Murphy side came from either county Kilkenny or Wexford, but with an O'Connor involved, it could be from County Kerry, as the latter name is indigenous to Kerry and there were many Murphy's there(being the most common name in Ireland). I have noticed that most of you are looking for relatives in Ireland. From what information that I have I still need to identify at lest one more generation or two before I would know where in Ireland to look. My great grandfather Thomas CONNER' father is reported to have served in the Civil War and had brothers who served on opposite sides of that war. I am looking for any information about Thomas CONNER who was married to Victoria Turner. They lived, in Baxter, WV. He was born in 1870 and died in 1927 in Owens, WV. I have no information from where he came from or where he was born. And I have no information on what his father's name was. Thomas and Victoria had two sons; George CONNER who was born in Douglas, WV 1902; and William (Bill) CONNER who was born in Douglas, WV and died in NY. George died in Oregon on March 5, 1968. Thomas also had two daughters, Beulah who married to Lloyd Boyer of Ohio and Thelma who married John Spiker of WV. It is also possible, that Thomas had other sons and daughters. Beulah' obituary notice implied other unnamed children. If you should have any information or need more information, I would appreciate an email. Thanks Stan
Hi all, Stopped by Barnes and Noble the other night sans kidlets and had to the time search the store. I found and purchased a booke entitled "Ellis Island Interviews, In Their Own Words" by Peter Morton Coan. Mr. Coan apparently worked at Ellis Island for quite some time and took the time to interview people later in life who had taken their first Americanized steps through Ellis Island. There are approximately 10 pictures included. The book is broken down into sections with stories by NAMED individuals under each section. In most cases, the NAMED individuals list the boat they came over on, the date, their birthdate and of course their story in their own words. Ellis Island Employyes (doctors/dentists and such) Italy (Southern and Northern) The British Isles (England/Ireland/Scotland/Wales) Northern Europe (Poland/Germany/Austria) Eastern Europe (Russia/Lithuania & the Ukraine/Greece/Czechoslovakia/Hungary/Romania) Scandinavia (Sweden/Denmark/Norway/Finland) Western Europe (France/Spain/Portugal/The Netherlands) The Middle East (Syria/Armenia/Turkey/Palestine) Appendices (Immigration records 1892-1954/Famous Immigrants/Aliens) It is a wonderful book with some wonderful stories! I know that Ancestry.com had it in their bookstore for a while. The price was approximately 14.00 with the sale. Personally, I think it is a must, it gives great history of each region when you read the stories! Desiree
I am trying to find some information about my g-g-grandfather James O'Connor. He was born in Ireland and married Ann Murphy. While in Ireland they had four children: Mary (born in 1861) Patrick F (born in 1863) Annie (born 1865) and James (born 1867). Both James and Ann were born 1835 - 1840. They emmigrated to America between 1868 and 1870 and settled in Fall River, MA. I am interested in finding out where in Ireland the family came from. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Kevin
Seems there was someone out there who was looking for information on Irish miners in Wisconsin. If you're still there, read my last post on the Iowa O'Connor. It contains a short sentence about Wisconsin miners.
The results of a 13 parish search (near Tipperary Town) for Timothy O'Connor marriage to Catherine ?? are: 1. Timothy O'Connor and Catherine Ryan - 1851 in the Parish of Cappamore (actually Co. Limerick) 2. Timothy O'Connor and Catherine Moloney - 1823 in the Parish of Anacarty (just outside of Tipp. Town) 3. Timothy O'Connor and Catherine Croke - 1826 in the Parish of Ballingarry (extreme eastern part of diocese near Kilkenny) While these are not my Timothy and Catherine, I thought I would share the results in case they belong to others. I am currently conducting another search of the remaining 23 parishes of Tipperary looking for my gggrandparents' marriage. They emigrated to Troy NY in the late 1860's or early 1870's. -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pat (Patraigin) Connors, California Siochain Leat (peace be with you) Researching: Connors/O'Connor, McEntee, Campbell, Flynn/O'Flynn, Smith, Phillips, Carter, Boyle, O'Rourke, Healey, Cullinan, Hoare, Todd, Owen, Booth http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/n/Pat-Connors/ mailto:[email protected] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IRISH AMERICA MAGAZINE, March/April 1995, "The Irish of Dubuque, Iowa", by Lyn Jerde, page 73. Irishman victim of first Iowa execution An Irish-born was the first European convicted and executed for murder in what is now Iowa--despite his protest that Dubuque had no laws under which he could be tried. The story of Patrick O'Connor is one of frontier justice, Dubuque's early Irish community and a very, very troubled man. An eyewitness account of O'Connor's life and death was published in a 1920 issue of PALIMPSEST, a historical journal of Iowa. O'Connor, born in County Cork in 1797, was hanged in the summer of 1834 for shooting his mining partner, George O'Keaf. In 1828, O'Connor, then of Galena, Illinois., broke his leg, and the limb had to be amputated. He was given a wooden leg and all the charity the people of Galena could muster--until his foul temperament caused people to grow tired of him. O'Connor came to Dubuque in 1833, where he entered a mining partnership with O'Keaf. The two shared a cabin just outside Dubuque. On May 19, 1834, O'Keaf came back to the cabin with a friend, and O'Connor wouldn't open the door. When O'Keaf forced the door open, O'Connor shot him with a musket. Eliphalet Price, an eyewitness to O'Connor's execution, said O'Connor replied, "That is my business," when miners asked him why he killed O'Keaf. Some wanted to hang him right then and there. Instead, a trial was held the next day under a spreading elm tree--despite O'Connor's protests that "ye have no laws in the country, and ye cannot try me." Iowa was then 12 years away from statehood, and was not then part of any organized territory--so there was no legal system. But a trial was held anyway, with O'Connor choosing his own jury. After hearing from three or four witnesses, the jury deliberated for about an hour before finding O'Connor guilty and sentencing him to die on the gallows at 1 p.m. on June 20. An Irish priest, the Rev. Charles Fitzmaurice, of Galena, denounced the trial as unjust and illegal. But Dubuque's Irish community didn't intervene on O'Connor's behalf. And a false rumor that 200 Irishmen were coming from Mineral Point, Wisconsin to free O'Connor only served to expedite his execution. On June 20, about 160 men formed a rifle company to march to the death site, with a fife and muffled drum. Shops closed. The village bell tolled. Fitzmaurice and O'Connor said he was sorry he killed O'Keaf, and asked the assembly's forgiveness. When O'Connor tried to tell the crowd whom he wanted to inherit his possessions, Fitzmaurice said," Do not mind your worldly affairs; in a few minutes you will be launched into eternity. Give your thoughts to God." O'Connor was buried, with his wooden leg, in a grave that had been dug at the foot of the gallows. "Immediately after this," Price wrote, "many of the reckless and abandoned outlaws, who had congregated at the Dubuque mines, began to leave for sunnier climes...The people began to feel more secure in their enjoyment of life and property." Price later became a politician, and a member of the Board of Curators of the State Historical Society of Iowa. This story is a edited version of a feature "The Greening of the Tri-States" by Lyn Jerde, which appeared in the Dubuque TELEGRAPH HERALD on March 13, 1994.
I'm going to Ireland soon and want to find out some O'Connor family info. My g-g-g grandparents Michael and Mary (Shay/Shea) O'Connor emigrated to Mason/Bracken Counties, Kentucky from County Kerry, Ireland. They were both born in 1826. Children were Daniel, Maurice, John, Michael, Mary, Dennis, Kate, Josie, and Nellie. Mary's brother Dan Shay/Shea also emigrated with them. Does anyone have any info on these O'Connor or Shea families in Kerry? Thanks, Lori O'Connor [email protected]
> I am looking for information on my family of O'Connor. Also spelled > O'Conner, and Conners. The family is from County Cork, Boherbue. > Dennis & Joanna O'Conner parents of Hannah Johanna O'Conner. Hannah > married Edward B Langton of New Burnswick Canada. Hi there Debi... I have a Johanna O'Connor, whose parents were Denis & Johanna (Lynch) O'Connor. My Johanna was born in the Huntingdon County, Quebec, Canada and was baptized "Johanna", on 15 Mar 1857 at St. Malachie d'Ormstown. Is this date the same or similar to the birth of your Joanna? Maybe we have a match there.... More than happy to share all the info I have on her family if she turns out to be your Joanna too. -=*> Sunset <*=-
Ok, here goes- I have looked everywhere for info on this subject. You may have already heard the story from other descendants, but as I am new to the list, I will tell it too. My ancestress, Isabel (Pheobe) O'Connor, was born in Ireland c1764. She came to the US c? and married Francis Able in PA in 1785. Now here is the story that has been spread through numerous family branches ever since. "Cousins" I have located through my genealogy research have the identical story being passed in their branches of the family. The story goes that Isabel (sometimes called Pheobe) grew up in a castle with a moat around it-she was a baroness in Ireland. This story has never been proved-BUT in the 1890's Francis and Isabel's grandson in Oregon, James Long Waldrip, was notified that as the oldest living heir of Isabel, he was entitled to the castle. He found that the taxes he would pay on it were more than it was worth, and let it "revert to the Crown." This can be proven-there is a notary record 1798 in Colfax Washington in which james certified that he was indeed Isabel's grandson and could collect the inheritance. I have searched for the castle, the "baroness" concept, etc. with no luck. Doea anyone have any ideas. i am planning a trip to Ireland in the next few years-it would be great to see tha castle. Dear Listers, I am looking for information on my family of O'Connor. Also spelled O'Conner, and Conners. The family is from County Cork, Boherbue. Dennis & Joanna O'Conner parents of Hannah Johanna O'Conner. Hannah married Edward B Langton of New Burnswick Canada. If anyone has information on this family I would love hearing from you. I have been unable to go back farther than this on my family line. Any help appreciated. Debi Foster
I have a question for all of you. How many of us are researching Canada for our ancestors ? Would you be interested in getting up the funds to purchase and get on the web all of the information regarding O'Connor/Var from The National archives Of Canada ? I found about 85 records which includes Conor, Connors, Conner, O'Conor, O'Conner, O'Connor and var. At 85 records of approximately 1 page each, I saw only 3 that had 2 pages. All of these at $.20 a page would cost us about $20.00-$25.00 to get all of the copies. Then with a few volunteers we could get these on a permanent website for all of us and for the next ones to come. Any takers ? <A HREF="http://www.ingeneas.com/free/index.html">inGeneas: Free Database</A> Let me know, please, even if you all think it's crazy. We could also consider doing the same with the O'Connor/Var passenger index for USA. I'm game, what about you ? We need to get some good Web Ring info out there. Or what about ? Come on guys, I just finished my marriage records web site I've been working on for a year, 650, 000 records. It's hard work, but worth it in the long run. Now I need a new project. The following obit caught my eye out of the 167 O'Connor obits. I seem to recall someone from the Flordia area looking for some of the lost families. This is available in the free(this month only database) at Ancestry.com And in answer to several questions: I am not connected to them , nor do I get a kick back or anything else. Just think it would be a shame to let this awsome freebie get away. Ley O'Connor, John C., at residence, 780 Sawyer ave., June 17, 1899. He came to Chicago from Jacksonville, FL six years prior to his death. He was a reporter with the Tribune, and later did literary publication work for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R.R.
