    2. ceathair fiche An Bhealtaine, or in Manx, kiare feed Boadlyn Flitting Day's Eve, On the Road Again...la la la la la la -- Road Again. In 1798 the '98 Rising started in Ireland. The Directory of the United Irishman had hoped for French aid but could not count on it. The planned an insurection for the 23rd of Mat, but the English had spies and the Irish leaders were arrested. On the 24th the uprising occurred in Meath, Leinster and Ulster. The participants were poorly armed and were suppressed and suffered heavy losses. Wexford put up the best fight. They were a mix of Saxons( they actually spoke an old Saxon language at that time) and the Irish.

Since the Ballyduff referred to is not the larger, may I gather that it is Ballyduff the Smaller, or are there more than two? 3. Are Ballyduff and the other places listed also parishes, or do they have other designations? 2. New to the list and wondering if anyone can help me with a place to start my research. I have ancestors Richard O'CONNOR (b. circa 1833, Ireland, emigrated to NY port, USA as a child, no knowledge of names of parents) and Bridget RIORDAN (b. circa 1832 Ireland, had a brother, no knowledge of parents; emigrated age 24) who eventually became his wife in Brooklyn, NY, USA circa 1865(?). I have not been able to find a marriage cert. and do not know where they came from in Ireland. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Janet in USA [email protected]

    1. Steeplechase riding/Irish Ballads and my O'Connor
    2. Iris Wood
    3. This request is unusual. However I have tried various sites including Steeplechase home page. Family Lore states that my O'Connor ancestor was a steeplechase rider (and possible horsebreader) who rode in a race where Tommy Corrigan was killed. Apparently there was a Ballad written about it. I can only guess it was in early 1800's and my gr grandmother was still singing it before she died in 1922. My ancestor may be John from Clare. I am not ruling out however that he was a McCausland from Northern Ireland. (see today's query re O'connor - Clare). If you have any "old folks" can you please ask if they remember anything about this in their family history and if you have gone to this trouble can you also ask if the know anything about O'Connors (although may be McCauslands) owning Linen Mills. Also...maybe someone can put me onto a research avenue for the the Linen Mill aspect. At this stage it is one of those family lore things that may have an element of truth in it - although just before WW2 there was talk of making an inheritance claim so they must have thought it feasible. Then the war got in the way. I know there was a lot of activity by the British prior to WW2 to gather unclaimed estates and no doubt all the death duties, so it could have been a McCausland estate and not O'Connor. Anyway worth a try as all other avenues failed and not worth the expense of a "proper" search at this stage when based only on a loose connection.. Many thanks. I hope it is seen as a challeng for this page which has a been a bit quiet of late. regards Iris Wood Western Australia

    1. O'Connor/Corbit-Clare?
    2. Iris Wood
    3. Hi all I have never listed this line on any of the sites - however it appears to be the only link that may lead to my O'Connors. John and Mary O'Connor (nee Corbit/Corbet) born Clare. (possible time frame 1805-1840- Farmers Dtr Ellen (pos Eleanor) b c 1840. Came to Victoria, Australia in 1860 where she immediately married George Henry McCausland from Northern Ireland. I am coming to the conclusion my gr grandfather was in fact the child of above and took his mothers maiden name. He was a republican.. All certificates say his parents were George Henry O'Connor and Ellen O'Connor. I know that he referred to a son of the McCauslands as his stepbrother (in fact his widow married him). . Was he in fact his real brother?? I also know that his wife Mary (nee Reilly) whose family came from Offaly were also Republicans she had a lot of contact with relatives on both sides as late as the time of "the troubles" in 1916. This distressed her. She was dead by 25th August 1922. My request is that someone may have this family in their line or may have some anecdotal stuff that will assist me. I am also posting another query under "steeplechase riding/ Irish Ballads" on this page as it may also give a clue. many thanks Iris Wood

    1. "Poor Ignorant Children" (New Book)
    2. Thought some of you might find this of interest. See Link at Bottom to go to article published in St. John Times Globe. Linda ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The D'Arcy McGee Chair of Irish Studies, Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada has published the book "Poor Ignorant Children", Irish Famine Orphans in Saint John, New Brunswick. The author, Peter Murphy charts the fate of three hundred and ten Irish orphans in a strange unwelcoming land. In 1994, Peter Murphy gained access to an old ledger of the admittance records of the "Orphan Asylum Established by His Excellency Sir William George Colebrook, 25 Octob. 1847." He transcribed this ledger and meticulously searched for any tracks that were left behind by these orphans in compiling the publication "Poor Ignorant Children." Great pains appear to have been taken in recording full particulars for each of the 310 children who were admitted to the asylum during the two-year period it operated out of the former city Almshouse at the corner of King Street East and Carmarthen. Included are name, date of admission, religion, age, place of "nativity" and the name of the vessel the immigrant child arrived on. Also added were notes concerning the fate of the parents of each child and details on each child's discharge. Beautifully produced and imaginatively designed, this book is a fitting memorial gesture to an event which had a huge impact on the social and political history of both Ireland and Canada. Full article on this book was published in the Saint John Times Globe on May 21, 1999. Connor "Utah, the Mormon heartland, is not a state often associated with Irish settlement, but several of its most prominent early citizens were Irish immigrants. Patrick Connor, for example, a Co. Kerry native, arrived in Salt Lake City in 1861, as a U.S. Army colonel at the start of the Civil War. His mission: to keep an eye on the Mormons - then considered a bizarre polygamist cult of dubious loyalty to the United States - and keep open the lines of communication between the East and West coasts against Confederate and Indian raids. A California gold fields veteran, he also did not overlook the possibilities for mining in the area. Connor chose to stay in Utah after the war and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 greatly facilitated his business endeavors. He wrote Utah's first mining laws, opened several smelting companies, started Utah's first daily newspaper, and owned the first steamship to navigate regularly on the Great Salt Lake." There is also a very good picture of the fellow on page 85.

(Two of their sons were killed in WWI) Have little to go on to identify Timothy O'Connor and Julia SULLIVAN's parents. >> Do you know their address in Boston or Woburn, or if they left a will? Having a house address for my ggparents was a way to find out some interesting leads. I went to Dedham, MA where old and new deeds for property are kept. The ones I was looking for were in some wonderful handwritten books in the basement. I was able to see who they bought the house from, when they passed the deed down to their children, and, eventually, the probate records showing ggfather's worldly possessions at the time of his death in 1885. For a gggrandfather in Hingham, I found a very interesting handwritten will in Plymouth, MA, where those town records are kept. I am guessing that you are looking for links back to Ireland. This route might not take you there, but it very well could. You might at least find their parents names in the documents, especially if one of them was involved in the purchase and sale of a house. From my experience, many family members got their names on the deeds. Call the town hall in Woburn and find out where the deeds, histories of a street address, and probate records for Woburn are kept, same for Boston. I'd start in Woburn because it's easier to find information in smaller towns, and to find something in Boston you probably need the most facts. I've only dealt with addresses in small town surrounding Boston. You need to check the census records if you haven't already. If you find Timothy and Julia listed in a household you might also see same names of older people in the household who might be their parents. Pat

    1. Celtic Calendar
    2. fiche An Bhealtaine,(20 May), or in Cornish, ugans Me In 685 the Battle of Nechtansmere was fought. Northumbria invaded Scotland (then called Pictland). The Picts under King Bruide defenaed the Northumbrians. I suppose a bunch of nude guys painted blue charging at you would give anyone cause to cut-and-run. (You probably all are aware that the Northumbrians today have a bagpipe playing tradition of their own) In 1981 Patsy O'Hara, Irish political prisoner, died on a hunger strike in maze prison, Northern Ireland.

    2. Regarding the information recieved from listmembers, I will allow John to continue sending the info out on a daily basis. I recieved 12, "I want it" and one who wasn't quite sure. Although this is definitely not everyone on the list (there are over 200), it is the same people who, share, keep in touch and help with lookups. I think that counts for a lot of the others that are not active on the list. If you have not spoken your thoughts, please do so very soon. I doubt it will change my decision. John, I ask only one thing would you please put Celtic Calendar in the subject line. And perhaps the date. That way anyone who wishes to delete has the opportunity to do just that and in the future, when we wish to look up anything in the O'Connor Archives, we can look for that particular date, or skip looking at those entries if one should desire. John please let me know if this is agreeable to you. Thanx all, Ley K. O'Connor Listowner
