    1. Kerry O'Connells
    2. My grandmother Mary (O'Connell) Foley was born in Kerry on June 12, 1905. She immigrated to U.S. and died in Providence, R.I. in October, 1970. She had two sisters (Nora and Noan) who also came to the U.S. and one sister (Kathleen or Catherine ?) who stayed in Kerry. Her father may have been Patrick ? O'Connell-not sure. Anyway, this is the only info that I have on her family. Does anyone know more? Thanks, Tim Foley

    3. Hi, I've just subscribed to this list so this is my first posting. Please bear with me until I get the hang of it. My great-great-grandfather was John W. O'Connell, born 1839 in County Cork. I don't know when or where he came to the US, but he enlisted into the Army in New York City on Nov. 9, 1855. I have a guess that he enlisted shortly after arriving in this country, but I have no proof. He married Ellen CALLAHAN (in some reports her surname is listed as SULLIVAN) on Jan. 5, 1865 at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in New York City. He served in the Army as a musician until his death on June 11, 1879, in Washington, DC. Among the locales where he served were Fort Hamilton, NY; Fort Point, San Francisco, CA; Sitka, AK; and Washington Arsenal, DC. During the Civil War he was captured by the Confederates and placed in a military prison in Pensacola, FL. In many of the military papers I have on John O'Connell, his surname is listed as CONNELL or CONNEL. Does anyone know why the O' was often dropped? John was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY. The plot was purchased by John HOLLONAN, an uncle of John O'Connell (or so the headstone proclaims), but I don't know the relationship. According to the headstone, also buried there are John Hollonan, his mother, Mary; his wife Mary; his two sons, Johnnie and Frank; his sister Ellen DONAVAN; and Michael BULLINS. As the headstone says, Hollonan was a native of Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. It says nothing of John O'Connell's birthplace. John and Ellen O'Connell had 4 children: William John (7/25/1867- 1/29/1883), Mary Ellen Cecilia (4/3/1869-10/27/1932), Thomas J. (8/15/1870- 1/16/1907), & lastly my great-grandmother, Emma Frances (4/18/1872-11/19/1913). Neither of the sons married so the family name from this branch ended. Emma married Christian Bohning in Little Rock, AR, on Jan. 15, 1889. They had 8 children: William, my grandmother Maude, Francis, Christian, Earl, Harold, Everett, and Florence. The family mostly lived in Rhode Island. According to my grandmother, John O'Connell supposedly was an orphan and thus had no money to go to America so he (and a brother?) got hired as cabin boys on a ship and made the passage in that way. He was said to have been about 10-14 years of age at the time. I don't know if there was a brother or not. Ellen O'Connell (John's wife) is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC, and buried in the same plot is a woman named Mary O'CONNELL on May 10, 1897. I don't know who this Mary O'Connell is nor why she wasn't buried with John in NY. If any of this sounds like it matches something you have, please let me know. I would love hear from you! Carol

    2. My great-great-grandmother Hanora O'Connell emigrated from Ireland in approximately 1847. Hanora was the widow of a John O'Connell. I don't know where in Ireland they are from -- although I believe tham to be from somewhere in the 3 corners area where Counties Kerry, Limerick, & Cork converge. Hanora came to the US with 5 children -- Delhia, Patrick, Richard, Mary & Michael. Michael was my great-grandfather. They settled initially in St. Charles, Illinois (just outside Chicago) and they subsequently moved to Frederika, Bremer County, Iowa. Hanora remarried in the US to a Patrick Griffin -- don't know the date (first of 5 Griffin surname children was born in Illinois sometime in 1854). Michael married Hannah Collins on 4/22/1867 in Waverly, Iowa. My grandfather, Peter, was born in Frederika in 1869 -- 3rd of 12 children. Peter homesteaded in Charles Mix county, South Dakota in 1899 just outside of Geddes. Peter married Lily Batstone 6/19/1901 in Geddes. Peter & Lily had 4 children. Peter died 8/27/1945. Do you have any matches with this information or any insights on the exact place in Ireland where I might pick up the trail? Thanks. Glen O'Connell

    3. Hi this was sent to me as an idea to start an exchange of info on the list. I think it is a very good idea. I would like all of your input. If you like it, then lets try it. How about asking about for an exchange of knowledge on the O' _____ origin. Was there a certain locality or village? How about the Celtic heritage? Does the name have a meaning in the Celtic language spoken in the area? Remember different versions of Celtic were spoken in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall. What kind of trade were the O' Connell's in? Are there still O' Connell's there? Some families trace their emigration to one person, other to many. I would Like to thank Ed Nance for his Suggestion. Good Luck, Angel

    1. Re: Search for Information on Kate O'Connell
    2. Hi. You were inquiring the parent's names of Kate O'Connell. We have no Kate in our family that came from Cty Cork. However when I started searching the O'Connells, I found that most of what I was looking for, birthdates, parents and even a marriage from 1854 could be found at the Family History Center by my home town. These Family History Centers are found at the local Mormon Church and can be a great resource for research. I found my information using the IGI (International Genealogical Index.). This was on fiche' and I made a photocopy of all our family that I found. Hope this has been of help and not something you already know! Good luck, Connie Bikowski

    3. Where is the best place to find info on the children and grandchildren of Daniel O'Connell (the Liberator)? I am trying to track the five brothers O'Connell who came to the US in the late 1840s. I believe they were grandsons of his but am unsure of which of his sons was their father. 2. Do you know the name of Kate O'Connell's mother and father, where she was born and where she lived? I think her family came from Cork County, Ireland. Kate married John William Augustus Czar Cooper approximately in the 1870's. Their home was in Nicholasville, Kentucky. She was the mother of 6 children, Nora, Margaret, Evelyn, Gus, John & Dudley. She died in the 1920's in Nicholasville, Kentucky. If so, kindly respond to RMMStaples@aol.com.

    3. Hello! I am looking for more info on Margaret O'Connell, b. abt 1882 in MO. Married William G. Brengle in St. Louis on January 21, 1901. According to the 1920 census, Margaret's mother was born in Ireland; father in Canada. She also had a sister named Mary G. who was living with her at the time of the enumeration. That is all I have so far. Does anyone know if Missouri has a Death Index? If I could order her death certificate, then perhaps I would find her parents' names.
