https://Groups.io/g/Obriant Welcome to Groups.io, our new home for genealogical discussions. This is an exciting time with a very impressive website and the opportunity to rekindle our communications and, perhaps, revive research that has been set aside for a time. Diane and I want to encourage you to make us of this group with your brick walls, successes, questions and whatever answers you may have for others' queries. To begin with, introductions are encouraged, including some history about yourself etc. If we can feel like a "family" we might get more out of being here. We definitely do not want to make this such a strict environment that you are discouraged from entering or starting discussions. If you on the Rootsweb list have not yet joined at groups.io, simply click on the link at top of this message and click "Join This Group." We want you to enjoy being a part of this group and to be glad you joined in the first place. If you have other group connections where you may spread the word about us that will be great as well. Looking forward to hearing from you all, Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden
This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails." We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. Please have patience about the creation of your group. The response has been tremendous and it is taking time to get them all set up. Also, creation of this group will depend upon your response to this missive. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di
We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Jim "Pops" Jackson and have been given the privilege of acting as List Admin for the OBRIANT List. I have been active with Rootsweb for nearly 20 years and have received great pleasure in doing so. I hope this message will help spur renewed activity with offers of helpful information, requests for help etc. Obviously this means that Rootsweb is back in active status after a period of difficulties that have been dealt with and needed upgrades made. I hope to hear from you soon with your comments, information and questions. Best wishes, Jim

I am working on my GG grandparents, Thomas and Parthenia O'Briant Horton. I can tell you that Thomas died in 1862. Don't know the day, but am sure of the year. Concerning Parthenia's date of death as you have recorded it, are you basing that on the Courier article or using another source? My reading of the Courier article leads me to think she may have died on May 25. The article ran on June 2, 1892, a Thursday. Since it says she died "last" Wednesday, that could mean a week ago rather than the day before the paper ran. If she had died only the day before the paper ran I would think they would say "Wednesday of this week"? If your information is from another source, please advise. thank you. In 1868, like so many of his fellow Reconstruction-era farmers, Ransom O'Briant was "adjudged" bankrupt. [In 1867, largely as a response to the severe adverse financial conditions of so many southerners after the Civil War, an act was passed by Congress that was entitled "An Act to Establish a Uniform System of Bankruptcy Throughout the United States."] All his real and personal estate was assigned to H. L. Bumpass, apparently a county officer, except some exempted property which was not listed. If the law was anything like it is today, Ransom's clothing and necessary possessions would be exempt, as might be the piece of property upon which he lived. He is later found in the 1870 Census living in Patterson Township, Orange County, next to his eldest son William. Ransom continued to be active in politics even after moving out of Person County. He was appointed a Wake County Magistrate in 1877 for the township of Cedar Fork. By March of 1882, he is noted as the Justice of the Peace of Cedar Fork. He was noted as a Democrat prior to the Civil War, but when Ransom ran for Durham County Coroner in 1884 he was endorsed by the Republican Party. Ransom owned a large farm at the time of his death off Lynn Road and Raleigh Road! The only hitch I can see (which may be just a clerical error) is that all of the documentation I've found suggests that Rebecca WILLIFORD OBRIANT was born in 1843, not 1823, but I've always thought there may have been a discrepancy there since she's 40 years younger than Zachariah. And I don't have birth records to back anything up! Which could explain why we're having such a hard time verifying her. Great call on the HESTER connection! I absolutely agree! I've got a lovely free evening tonight to do some Internet digging. We have plans to do some actual looking next year in Webster County KY and surrounds. I connected a few years ago with a living BRYANT that still lives there. I'm hoping to see a few pictures! You must have done the DNA testing. I'm really considering it. Let me know if you think it's worth it. Linda Anderson LindaLou6232 at Gmail dot com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Also on the 1850 census Granville Co., NC is Becca WILLIFORD b. abt 1823 NC residing with the ELLIS residence. This is the same ELLIS family that married into the WILLIFORD family from Sampson Co., NC. On the 1840 census is Susan WILLIFORD and also on the same page is Robert O'BRIANT (Robert Alexander O'Briant m/t Elizabeth Philpott) Robert Alexander O'BRIANT is Patrick O'BRIANT m/t Faithey HESTER. Patrick and Faithey O'BRIANT, I'm 99.9% certain are the parents of Zachariah (Hester or Hamilton) O'BRIANT, Sr. which would stand to reason the name. Faithey HESTER is the d/o of Zachariah Hamilton HESTER Elizabeth FRAZIER. I've been getting some replies from my family finder DNA yDNA & mtDNA. I've rec'd 2 distance cousin matches for a Malichi WILLIFORD and his brother Micajah WILLIFORD. This lineage is originally from Sampson Co., NC. Micajah and Malichi WILLIFORD moved into Warren Co., GA after during 1850. Yes, I agree with you...there is a WILLIFORD connection here. DNA is DNA...the matches have brought me to this point and sorting it out. Thank you, Catherine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
