Michael is my 4th great grandfather, our line comes down from his son John Oberlin, then Allen Alonzo Oberlin and so on. I would be glad to share anything that may help you. There are 3 of us I know that actively work on this line. Larry Oberlin, Ruth Oberlin Fahmer and myself. My grandmother was Oberlin. I've just started researching my family line, and have discovered that we are descendants of Johan Christoph(er) (1743-1811). I am having trouble finding vital records for Christoph's son, Michael (1782-1852). He married a woman named Elizabeth, but I have not found any evidence of her maiden name. The oldest vital record I have is for Michael's son, Michael (1817-1881). He married Lea Valentine (1824-1894). If you have any information on Michael-52 (as I call him), I would love to talk to you! The could be in the Clinton Cemetery in Summit Co. It is near Canal F. Ask the Akron Library to do a look up for you at http://sc.akronlibrary.org/genealogy/ They also have an obituary index on the site. These inscription books were done in the early 1980's, so if your ancestor died after that, they will not appear in the books. Here is a site where you can check the other volumes http://archive.org/search.php?query=creator:Ohio Genealogical Society. Stark County Chapter Adoption records are kept at the Stark Co library, but they are on microfilm and lookng anything up is extremely time consuming. And your ancestor may never have been formally adopted. Here is their site, just in case, http://www.starklibrary.org/genealogy Best of luck-- Judith in OH Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I saw the Oberlin House listed there I was born in Akron and my maiden name was Judith Lois Oberlin. January 30, 1941. My grandfather was Albert Clayton Oberlin, born May 17, 1879. From what I understand, out of wedlock, in Barberton, Ohio. No one is left to ask questions of. My father was Delbert Marion Oberlin, born July 1, 1908 in Barberton, Ohio. (Snyder Town) I have heard, without any confirmation, that my grandfather worked for a man as a child and his last name was Oberlin. They say my grandfather took it upon himself to take the name. I don't know if this is true or not and if he was born out of wedlock this could be the story they used to cover the indiscretion and that really would have been his last name. Have you seen any of these names in your study of the Oberlins? Look forward to hearing from you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: vicki1024 Surnames: Oberle Oberlin Zwecker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oberlin/208.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks Larry. Your thoughts mirror mine. I now have a copy of Michael Oberle's will where he calls his wife Christina Barbara. The deed records are from the digital images that are on-line at www.lancasterdeeds.com. These are likely at least third generation deed books since they are typed. The deed from deed book N, page 446 (27 Sep 1764) calls Michael Oberlin's wife Elizabeth. In the second deed book entry, book N, page 450 (21 Oct 1773) she is still called Elizabeth and the signature is identified as Elizabeth (she made her mark). It is likely that the two were recorded together and perhaps the clerk made the change. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: larryoberlin Surnames: Oberln, Zwecker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.oberlin/208.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe he married only once to a Christina Barbara Zwecker. (Also noted in Ancestry and descendants of Hans Wendell Zwecker). Is see in the deed records you mention the questioned Elizabeth. Could it be a transcription error from the original document? I believe the only place the Elizabeth Oberlee shows up is in Wendell's indenture of 1774. Therefore, my reason why only one Zwecker wife: Michael Oberlin marries Christina Barbara Zwecker in 1742 In the will record of Margaret Zwecker 1771 (Wendell's wife), she states her daughter Christina (wife of Michael Oberly). There are Michael Oberlin will record documents dated 1787 & 1791 that continue to include Michael's wife as Christina and Christina Barbara. It also appears that Christina did not have a sister named Elizabeth. Oft times when losing a wife early a husband would marry a older or younger sister. Christina Oberlin (d 1791) is buried next to Michael at the Bergstrasse cemetery. Just some of my dis-jointed thoughts on the subject.
