    3. HBH 1890 August 11 HANSEN Bertie A small boy named Bertie HANSEN, aged seven years, created considerable sensation on Saturday afternoon. He had been in the habit of crawling through the flood-water culverts at the railway crossings near HOLT'S mill, and was pursuing his favourite pastime on Saturday. Apparently he lost his nerve while so engaged and stuck fast beneath the centre of the road. His parents, who live near, learned of the occurrence, and the father, assisted by a kind-hearted telegraph linesman, set vigorously to work on the crown of the road, and after considerable labor reached the culvert, removed a batten, and rescued the adventurous youth. The road was being opened just as the people were returning from the football match on the Recreation Ground, and the sight of two men actively working with picks in the presence of most of the female inhabitants (and all the babies) of the neighbourhood soon attracted a large crowd....more
