    3. Judy Weller A narrow escape from drowning occurred on Saturday afternoon off the Eastern Spit. Mr Walter JOHNSON of the Deeds Office was on his way to the pier when he noticed an object floating on the surface of the water some 60 to 80 yards from the shore, and on hurrying to the beach saw that it was the body of a child. Mr JOHNSON, who was suffering from a severe cold, immediately divested himself of his clothing and swam out and brought the child to the shore, to all appearnce lifeless, and summoned the assistance of Messrs HAWKE and PEAKE. The child, which proved to belong to Mr Dennis M'CARTHY, was taken to the house of Mr HUNT, and Dr. MENZIES was telephoned for. After two hours' rubbing and the necessary restoratives having been applied, the child regained consciousness. Mr JOHNSON was supplied with dry clothing by one of the neighbors, and was driven home by Dr. MENZIES.
