Judy Weller Constable STEPHENSON effected a smart capture yesterday morning. On Monday last a portmanteau and contests, valued at £16, was missed from the residence of Dr. MOORE, the property of Miss K. BROWNING, but the theft was conducted so smartly or with such good opportunity that it was thought the perpetrator would remain undiscovered. A man named GRIFFIN lately out of gaol after doing six months for larceny at GISBORNE was known to be knocking about town, and the police received instructions to keep a look out for him. Yesterday, while on his beat, Constable STEPHENSON's attention was attracted to a man who darted into the Star Hotel as though to escape observation, and though he did not know the man the astute guardian of the peace took the cue, and promptly arrested him. Subsequent inquiries elicited the fact that the man had disposed of the property to Mrs HANWELL at great sacrifice, and for 10s only. The accused will appear at the S.M. Court this morning to answer the charge.
