HBH 1896 Feb 28 2 Constable LAW and HAMILTON The Poverty Bay Herald says: - A brutal assault was made on Constable LAW on Tuesday evening by a drunken fellow named Michael HAMILTON, whom the constable was arresting for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse. Constable LAW'S eye and the side of his face were blackened and a handful of his beard was pulled out, and the man, not content with thus battering the limb of the law, kicked and attempted to stamp on him. The man who was a sailor on the Ocean Rover, and was discharged from that vessel for misbehavior, was brought before Mr BOOTH S.M. The Magistrate characterised the assault as a most brutal and unwarranted attack, and said he would inflict the full penalty. Accused was fined £20 or three months imprisonment with hard labor in Napier gaol for assaulting the police, and for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse was fined ?5 or two months' imprisonment, the sentence to be cumulative.
