Court this morning James SMITH was brought up on remand.....on a charge of stealing a watch, a gold guard, and a necktie from the Railway Hotel, Kaikora, on the 13th of September. Mr MANISTY, of Napier, appeared for the defence. On the application of the police, the information was withdrawn, and a new one substituted charging him with stealing the necktie only......The Bench said that defendant's conduct and surroundings were highly suspicious and discreditable, and as he was confessedly guilty of stealing the tie, he was convicted and sentenced to three hours' imprisonment, in consideration of his having been locked up for a week already.
